SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The UCSC cross country teams opened their seasons with strong team performances at the University of San Francisco Invitational. The meet delivered the expected high level competition with Stanford, Cal, BYU and USF all toeing the line with the Slugs.
In the non-DI scoring division, the UCSC women placed first overall, led by junior Caitlin Devlin in 19:51 for the 5000m course. Jamey West, Mimi Petersen, Soph Lundeberg and Anna Gururajan completed the scoring for the team.
The men's team showed a nice mix of youth and experience but were outpaced by two-time defending California Community College state champion American River College for the men's non-DI team win. Running in the lead pack filled with Stanford, Cal and USF athletes, through the first four miles of the 8000m race, senior Tyler Hoyt posted a 25:49 time to lead the UCSC men. Eddie Strnad, Nathan Platt, Nicholas Hill, and Theron Carmichael completed the team's scoring.
Both teams return to competition at the Sonoma State Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 21.
