Banana Slugs Participate in USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO (9-5) – UC Santa Cruz participated in their first race today in San Francisco as they ran in the USF Invitational. Their opposition included six NCAA Division I schools, five NCAA Division II schools, two junior colleges and one NAIA school.

In the men's race, Andrew Beckner led the Banana Slugs with a time of 27:18.4 which placed him in 65th place. Joe Shanahan finished in 75th place with a time of 27:31.8. Dante Capone finished with a 27:57.1 time and an 83rd place finish. Takehiro Yamaya finished in 85th with a time of 28:01.6. Tommy Smail finished 93rd with a time of 28:30.2. Andy Buck finished with a 30:07.8 time and a 113th place finish. Derek Jeffries finished in 116th place with a 30:18.8 time. Liam Dugard rounded out the Banana Slugs' contingent with a 120th place finish and a 30:46.2 time.

 

In the women's race, Jamie West led the Banana Slugs with a 33rd place finish with a time of 19:22.9. Frankie Loayza finished with a time of 19:53.1 and a 46th place finish. Lizzie Meredith finished with a time of 20:09.8 which was good enough for a 54th place finish. Shannon McClish finished a tenth of a second behind Meredith and finished in 55th place. Autumn Burton finished in 60th place with a time of 20:23. Natalie Marquardt finished with a time of 20:48.8 and placed 64th. Raissa Boysen finished 73rd with a time of 21:21.6. Emmaline Fronczak finished in 86th place with a time of 22:21.5. Isabelle Panza finished in 88th place with a time of 22:35.8. Casey Chien was the next across the finish line with a time of 22:37.2. Evelyn Muros wrapped up the Slugs' team with a 22:42.1 time and a 90th place finish.  

 

In the men's team competitions, the University of California-Berkeley won the race while UC Santa Cruz finished ninth. Chris Walden of UC Berkeley won the individual competition. As with the men's race, the women's race had UC Berkeley winning the team competition while UC Santa Cruz finished ninth. Bethan Knights of UC Berkeley won the individual competition.

 

The Banana Slugs will now be off until October. The Banana Slugs' next race will be October 3rd as they will travel Claremont to participate in the Pomona Pitzer Invitational.
