After 22 years of successful high school coaching at one of the nation's premiere programs (St. Joseph Notre Dame H.S., Alameda CA), Coach Johnson will lead UC Santa Cruz into his sixth full season as Head Coach.

While taking over a program which was going through transition, Coach Johnson's first season the team won three games playing one of the strongest D-3 schedules in the country. In his second year, the team doubled their win total, winning 6 games, but it wasn't the win totals that spoke loud as much as it was the style of play that caught fans' and coaches' attention. The team won 6 of their final 10 games. They changed their style of play to an up-tempo aggressive man-to-man defense and a fastbreak style of offense, which is the way he coached at St. Joseph H.S.

Coach Johnson spends a lot of the off-season working with professional players by helping them improve their games. He also travels to basketball coaches' clinics as well as getting tutelage and sharing ideas and techniques with several professional and college coaches about some of the finer points of coaching.

Coach Johnson retired from major level slo-pitch softball (twice named California player of the year, named on 10 All-American teams and two National Championships). In his spare time, Coach Johnson, a long time (6th Degree Black Belt) martial artist, teaches classes at Best in the West (BITW) in San Leandro, CA, conducts and speaks at basketball coaches clinics, coaches youth basketball at the Olympic Club, San Francisco and plays golf. In addition, Coach Johnson, with the help of some professional basketball sports trainers, has developed a top weight and conditioning basketball programs for high school and college athletes.
