Slugs beat Golden State Baptist on Senior Night

Playing their last regular season home game, the Slugs took on a scrappy bunch from Golden State Baptist College (Bears) and handed them an 88-54 loss.

This was a special night for the Slugs as they would send off their four seniors; Bryan Maeda, Jimmy Herrera, Jon Miller and Fernando Barreda with a lovely celebration and a victory.

The game started out with the Slugs jumping out to an early lead with some clutch shooting from Bryan Maeda (8 points 3-4 field goals, 2-2 three pointers) and a first half explosion from freshman Michael Hicks (11 points, 3-4 three pointers). But it was the aggressive defensive pressure that was the difference as the Slugs would force the Bears into 16 first half turnovers and would go in the half leading 47-31.

The second half the Slugs again came out and attacked the Bears with their defensive pressure and forced numerous turnovers which led to some easy buckets and the victory.

Hicks led all scorers with 21 points and Jimmy Herrera chipped in 15. But this was a team victory as everyone contributed in some manner whether it was scoring, rebounding or playing tenacious defense. “This was one of the best games we have played as a team this year; I saw a bunch of players that now have become a team. The passing and play making was at a different level”, stated Coach Johnson after the game.

Although the game was great, it was the send off of the seniors that made the night special. With the new Athletic Director, Linda Spradley in attendance and taking part in the ceremony, the crowd gave the seniors a roaring ovation before and after the game. “This has been my third year as Head Coach and it never gets any easier because over the years these young men become part of your family and it’s hard to let a love one go. These four men have put a lot into the growth of this program and they will be missed”, stated Coach Johnson.

The Slugs still have three regular season games left on the road (at Dominican University, and two in Colorado against Colorado College and University of Dallas) before they host the Western D-3 Independent Championships on February 24th and 25th.
