Slugs Beat Up Cal Tech

The Slugs playing their first game against a D-3 opponent took advantage of numerous turnovers and put away the Cal Tech Beavers 82-46.  The Slugs turned a poorly played first half into a blowout as they settled down and ran their offense and turned up the pressure on defense to out score the Beavers 40-26 at the half.  “I was very disappointed in our play in the 1st half, we committed 17 fouls, accounting for 14 points,” stated an upset Coach Johnson.

The Slugs actually jumped out to an early lead behind the play from a different starting line-up of Ari Ben-Avram, Carlos Leon Jr., John (Scotty) Buck, Jacob Moore and Eric Davis.

The new lineup deployed a full court press and some in-your-face pressure defense to force Cal Tech into 11 first half turnovers, which the Slugs converted into 20 points.

In the second half the Slugs cut down on the fouls and started attacking the rim and took advantage of their overall team speed to take over the game with a 42-20 half and secure the game.

The Slugs again showed balanced scoring by Jon Morrison with 16, Niel Brennan with 12, Ted Monson with 11 and Ryan Matsuoka and Scotty Buck with 9.

“I’m pleased with the outcome of the game, but we are going to have to a better job on the defensive end of the floor”, stated Coach Johnson after the game.

The Slugs next game will be against Whitman College, 11/24 in the Cal Tech Classic.
