Slugs Split Weekend Trip With Loss To Whitman

The Men Slugs couldn’t hold off a determined group of Missionaries from Whitman College, loosing 70-53 to end what started out as a great weekend at Cal Tech University.

The young Slugs got out the gate quick as they jumped the Missionaries with 11 quick points, taking an 11 to 3 lead behind the shooting of Freshman Ryan Matsuoka (10 first half points) and Sophomore Greg Palmer.  The Missionaries feeling things were about to get away from them called a timeout to settle things down.  Following the timeout the Missionaries and tournament leading scorer Chris Faidley got hot and started hitting from everywhere on the court.  Faidley hit 6 of his next 8 shots for a 22 point first half to push the Missionaries to a 43 to 30 half time lead.

The second half the Slugs came out and made a run at the Missionaries again behind Ryan’s ability to get to the rim, hit long range jumpers and also create space for his teammates to get some good looks at the basket.  The Slugs managed to cut the lead to 8 points but couldn’t get any closer.

The Slugs battled the bigger Whitman despite being undermanned with the loss of guard Eric Davis to an ankle injury in the Cal Tech game and in Whitman game injuries to Ari Ben-Avram (elbow), Jacob Moore (hip) and Jon Morrison (concussion).

“I was pleased with the effort from the young men as they never gave up at any time over the weekend.  I was also pleased with Palmer, who had been struggling with his shot, finally getting his shooting touch back” stated Coach Johnson after the game.

The young Slugs get a couple days to rest before they take their exciting brand of basketball on the road again, this time to Redlands University where they will again make a run at their 1st tournament championship for quite some time.
