Slugs Land Second Local Player
SANTA CRUZ, CA --UCSC Men’s Basketball Team is announcing the verbal commitment from its second local product, 6’2”, 170lbs guard, Kevin Konopelski of Cabrillo College.
Kevin was a three year varsity guard for Santa Cruz High from 2003 – 2006. After graduating in 2006, Kevin attended Cabrillo College, where he played 2007 thru 2009 as a starter. (more)

Slugs Secure Solid Recruit
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Slugs Men’s Basketball Team announced the verbal commitment of local product, Alejandro (Alex) Abarca from the Harker School, San Jose, CA.
The four‐year varsity starter is a 6’2” (and still growing), 170‐pound combo‐guard that has a versatile game. However, his style of play sometimes resembles that of a power forward because of his ability to score inside the lane.(more)

Promising Finish for Slug Hoopsters
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The 2008/09 Men’s Basketball Team had their best season to date under Coach Johnson, finishing with an 11 and 15 record and runner up in the Western Region Independent Post Season Tournament for the second season in a row, while never having its projected starting 5 on the floor any time throughout the season . Matsuoka Earns First Team All-Independent
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Finlandia University’s Tyler Gordon, who led the Association of Division III Independents in scoring, headlines the 2009 All-Independent Men’s Basketball teams announced today by the AD3I.
Gordon, a junior guard from Red Cliff, Wis., averaged a league-leading 23.4 points per game and 4.6 steals per game. He ranked third with 3.6 assists per game and pulled down an average of 5.5 rebounds per contest. He shot 46 percent fro

Slugs Snap East Bays 11 game Win Streak
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The Slugs were coming off a tough loss vs. Chapman on Sunday and knew they would have their hands full with the hot Pioneers. CSU East Bay was riding an 11 game win streak into the West Field House, boasting a 16-5 record and the reigning Cal Pac Player of the Week Tauran Moore. UCSC got things started early and jumped out to a 5-0 lead before CSU called a quick timeout and answered with an 11-3 run of their own. (more)

Slugs Get Back on Track with Win Against CSU Maritime
SANTA CRUZ -- After a Saturday night loss on the road the Slugs were eager to get back to action and they didn’t have to wait long. On Monday night CSU Maritime came into town boasting a very tough defense and fresh off a very impressive victory vs. Bethany 2 nights before. Daniel Bryant was back in the lineup and got things going early for the Slugs knocking down his first 3 shots, soon Ryan Matsuoka would join him and UCSC was off and running. (more)

Matsuoka Earns Association of Division III Independents Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Award
University of California-Santa Cruz sophomore guard Ryan Matsuoka (Cupertino, Calif.) is this week’s Association of Division III Independents men’s basketball Player of the Week. Matsuoka averaged 16 points and four rebounds per game while shooting 19-of-37 (.514) from the floor and 6-of-11 (.545) from beyond the three-point arc. The Slugs finished the week 2-1 overall and 2-0 against Div. III opponents. (more)

Slugs go 2-0 at Thanksgiving Classic
UCSC got things rolling in game 1 of the Occidental/Cal Tech Classic vs the host, Occidental. The Tigers, who last season were the SCIAC regular season champs as well as an NCAA Tournament team, were the 1st chance for the Slugs to get back on track after a poor performance in San Diego. (more)

Slugs Take One on the Chin at Pt. Loma
The Slugs knew going into their game vs Pt. Loma that they would need to play nearly flawless if they wanted to come away with their 1st victory of the season. Pt Loma playing in one of the toughest NAIA Conferences in the country as well as coming off a 20 win season with 3 division 1 transfer starters proved to be the Slugs toughest test of the season. Claremont Stuns the Slugs
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- For 39 minutes and 53 seconds UCSC had control of Claremont Stags and the game. At times a commanding lead, but with 7 seconds left Claremont’s Austin Soldner hit a 3 from the right wing that gave the Stags their 1st lead of the game at 69-68 and it would prove to be the final score.
A stunned home crowd celebrating UCSC’s first game in the West Field House in over a year stood silently as Claremont celebrated their come from behind victory. The Slugs jumped out early and were seemingly scoring at will. Neil Brennan went to work in the post which has become a match-up that has favored the Slugs in every game so far this season. Some balanced scoring and defensive pressure got UCSC off and running. At half Santa Cruz led 36-30 and had been up as much as 12 points. (more)

Slugs Can't Overcome Slow Start Against SF State
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The Slugs looked to bounce back from a disappointing opening weekend in Tacoma, Washington in their next game, San Francisco State.
The Slugs were the home opener for the local D2 and once again got off to a slow start. UCSC found themselves down 5-0, 18-4 and eventually 30-9 with 9 minutes left in the 1st half. The never say die Slugs sparked by Ehson Mortezaie’s 10 points off the bench, would go on a run of their own with an 18-4 run capped off by 2 free throws from Ryan Matsuoka which cut the lead to 34-27 a few minutes before the half. Slugs Open Season in Tough Washington
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Men's Basketball team opened
their season on Saturday November 15th in Tacoma Washington at Puget Sounds
Tip Off Classic vs. host UPS. For the past 7 years UPS has been the winningest
D3 program on the West Coast. They opened as near unanimous pre-season
favorites in a tough North West Conference, return 3 All Conference Seniors
and are ranked in the top 30 in the country. The Slugs had pointed to
this game since the end of last season as a great opportunity to make
a statement, and for 35 minutes the Slugs were making it loud and clear.

Season Preview 2008-2009: UCSC Banana Slugs Will
Look To Run, Run, Run
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- After a season in-which the Slugs dealt
with adjusting to adversity this year they are looking to get back on
track and make the run they've been looking for. Since Coach Johnson's
arrival five and half years ago, he feels he finally has the team that
can play at the up-tempo pace he was use to at St. Joseph Notre High School,
with the likes of Calvin Byrd (Villanova), Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks),
Ray Young (UCLA), Justin Davis (Stanford) and a host of others. (more)
