Slugs Secure Solid Recruit

SANTA CRUZ, CA --The UCSC Slugs Men’s Basketball Team announced the verbal commitment of local product, Alejandro (Alex) Abarca from the Harker School, San Jose, CA.

The four‐year varsity starter is a 6’2” (and still growing), 170‐pound combo‐guard that has a versatile game.  However, his style of play sometimes resembles that of a power forward because of his ability to score inside the lane.

Abarca was voted League MVP in 2008 and runner up in 2009 in the newly formed West Bay Athletic League (Central Coast Section). A four year team MVP, Abarca averaged 19.6 points, 5.18 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals and converted 54 percent of his field‐goal attempts and 81 percent of his free throws over his four years of varsity play at the Harker School in San Jose, CA.
Head Coach Gordon (Gordie) Johnson is excited to get a chance to work with the talented player, “Alex will give us added depth in the guard and wing position, which we were a little thin at last season.  I really like the way Alex attacks the rim and he also shoots the jumper from 20 feet in, very consistently.  Alex is also a very tough defender who will bring some needed help on the defensive boards.  This was a good get for us for now and the future.  His game reminds you a lot of sophomore guard, Ryan Matsuoka”.
