Slugs Land Second Local Player

SANTA CRUZ, CA --UCSC Men’s Basketball Team is announcing the verbal commitment from its second local product, 6’2”, 170lbs guard, Kevin Konopelski of Cabrillo College.

Kevin was a three year varsity guard for Santa Cruz High from 2003 – 2006. After graduating in 2006, Kevin attended Cabrillo College, where he played 2007 thru 2009 as a starter.

UCSC has been a big part of Kevin’s family because both of his parents work for the university.  His father, Joe Konopelski, is a Professor of Chemistry and has worked at UCSC for 25 years.  His mother, Nancy Cox-Konopelski, has worked as a part of the Ace Program for 21 years, 11 of which she has been the Program Director.

“Kevin was a surprise get for us”, stated Coach Johnson.  Coach Johnson goes on to say, “Kevin gave me a call one day and asked if he could come over and meet me and work out with the guys in open gym. After a couple of workouts plus the feedback I was getting from the players, I had to see him play for myself and I was truly surprised and impressed.”

Kevin will bring to the team an ability to score from the outside and to play aggressive defense which will fit in with the clamp-down defense the Slugs have been working to get to.
