CLAREMONT, CA -- On opening night of the David Wells Classic hosted by the Claremont and Pomona Colleges the UCSC Men’s Hoop Team squared off with defending SCIAC Champs Claremont Mudd Scripps College. In the first half each team enjoyed slight leads, Jr. Guard Ryan Matsuoka led the Slugs with 9 points 4 rebound’s and 2 assist’s. Darrin Lew, Eric Norton and Niel Brennen each chipped in 6 for UCSC. Jr. Fwd Chris Blees led CMS with 10 pts. 5 boards and 3 assists of his own and the Stags held a 35-30 advantage. In the 2nd half CMS was too much for UCSC to handle as they dominated the boards (25-10) and shot 80% as a team from the charity stripe en route to a 74-60 victory. The Slugs had no answer for Blees (the reigning SCIAC Player of the Year) as he finished with a game high 23 points and 13 boards. Matsuoka paced the Slugs with 18 points and 4 rebounds. Lew added 11 and 3 assists for UCSC .
The following evening saw UCSC face off with the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens. In an attempt to send a message to his team Coach Johnson made a change and inserted Fr. Alex Abarca and Tyler Hunt into the starting lineup. UCSC jumped out on Pomona to the tune of a 35-20 halftime advantage, with Hunt and Abarca combining for 12 points on 5-8 shooting including 2-2 from behind the arch. Darrin Lew came off the bench and paced the Slugs with 11 points in 11 minutes. In the 2nd half the Slugs led by as many as 22 before Pomona used a barrage of three’s to climb back into the game. Pitzer would go 8-14 in the half from 3 point land while only shooting 6-19 from inside 3. Lew’s 17 pts and Ryan Matsuoka’s 16 points and 6 boards would ensure UCSC’s first win of the season. Greg Palmer had 11 points while Niel Brennen and Ted Monson each grabbed 8 boards to round things out for the Slugs.
