Washington Woes Continue for Slugs
WALLA WALLA, WA -- The state of Washington has not been kind to UCSC Men’s Hoops. On Friday the trend continued as the Slugs faced off vs. no.18 ranked Puget Sound at the UPS Tip-Off Classic. Kaleb Shelton’s 20 points and 7 boards combined with the Loggers constant pressure proved to overwhelm the Slugs to the tune of 94-79. UPS would lead by as many as 11 at 45-34 after an Austin Boyce three with 4 minutes left in the half. The Slugs would cut into that lead but UPS had the 45-39 advantage at the break. Ryan Matsuoka led UCSC with 9pts while Boyce’s 12 and Shelton’s 11 paced UPS. In the 2nd half the Loggers stepped on the gas and with 7 minutes left a Nadav Haymen jumper pushed the lead to 26. UCSC would battle to the end eventually falling by 15. UPS would force 27 Slug turnovers and got to the free throw line 52 times on the evening, nailing 37 of those attempts. Matsuoka’s game high 21 points on 7/8 shooting led the Slugs.
The next night UCSC faced off with no.16 Whitworth. Feeling the effects of the loss the previous night Whitworth jumped all over UCSC early leading 39-21 before the Slugs would answer closing the gap to 44-37 at the half. The momentum would carry into the 2nd half for UCSC as the Slugs would soon tie the game at 51 and shortly after take a 56-54 lead. With 2:30 left in regulation UCSC held its final lead 68-67. Whitworth would score the next 5 to take a 72-68 advantage and never relinquish the lead again. Darrin Lew’s 22 would lead all scorer’s and secure his spot representing UCSC on the All Tournament Team. Whitworth had 6 players land in double figures and forced 19 Slug turnovers. Ryan Matsuoka had 15 points 8 boards and Eric Norton added 12 pts for the Slugs.
