2nd Half Collapse Dooms Slugs
ROCKLIN, CA -- For the first 25 minutes UCSC was executing excellently on both ends of the floor, the Slugs held a 40-25 advantage with just under 16 minutes left in 2nd half when the momentum swung. William Jessup ended the game in a flurry as they outscored UCSC 55-28 to end the contest and secure an impressive come from behind win 80-68.
UCSC returned from Christmas break to travel to Sacramento for their 14th straight road game to star the season. Junior Guard Darren Lew got the Slugs going in the first half shooting 5/6 from the floor finishing with 11 at the break and helping UCSC to a 30-23 lead. In the 2nd half saw more of the same as the Slug lead got to 15 before things seemingly fell apart. UCSC was held without a field goal for nearly 6 minutes at one stretch and never was able to get back into any kind of rhythm as William Jessop came back for the 80-68 victory. Turnovers and free throws ended up being the Slugs undoing as WJU forced 14 second half turnovers and were able to attack the rim and get to the line 32 times in the 2nd half. Jason Washington was the catalyst for WJU, he finished with 21 points 4 assists 5 steals and seemed to make every big play down the stretch. Junior Wing Ryan Matsuoka had a game high 23 pts for UCSC with Freshman Guard Alex Abarca contributing 16 in the losing effort. The Slugs start the 2010 part of their schedule at Cal Maritime on Jan 2nd.
