Men's Basketball Post Season Tournament-First Day Results

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Game 1: Chapman versus University of Dallas: The Panthers scored early and often to secure the first spot in the championship game. Led by Griffin Ramme’s 16 points, Chapman ran out to a 43-21-halftime lead. Chapman shot an incredible 70.6% in the second half and 60% for the entire game. Dallas was held to 30% from the field. Freshman Ross Davidson led the Crusaders with 17 points. Final score was Chapman 73, Dallas 43.

Game 2: Nebraska Wesleyan versus UC Santa Cruz. In a game that was in doubt until the final buzzer, the Slugs, led by Ryan Matsuoka’s 31 points where able to secure the second spot in the championship game with a 74-71 victory. Brent Jacobs pulled down a season high 12 boards and swatted three Prairie Wolf shots into the stands. With 1:51 left in the game, junior Nick Dinan of Nebraska Wesleyan scored the last of his 16 points to give the Prairie Wolves their first lead of the second half, 69-67. Ryan Matsuoka then took over for the Slugs, scoring the next 7 points from the line. Ryan hit two free throws with 1 second left in the game to secure the victory.

Third Place Game: Saturday, 5pm: University of Dallas versus Nebraska Wesleyan. A contrast in styles, Dallas tends to pound the ball inside to 6’7 freshman, Ross Davidson while Nebraska Wesleyan tends to light it up from outside. The Prairie Wolves hit 7 of 13 from behind the arc against UCSC. Freshman Jonah Bradley was 4 for 4 for threes while dropping in 16 points. Junior Nick Dinan dished out 7 assists while also scoring 16 points. 6’8 Bryan Arp supplies the force down low for NW, pulling down a team high 4 rebounds and scoring the first 6 points last night. Ross Davidson scored 17 on a variety of low post moves for Dallas. He also had a team high 5 rebounds. Barrett Brown, quiet last night, is usually a strong outside threat for the Crusaders.

Championship Game: Saturday, 7pm: Chapman University versus UC Santa Cruz:. Two common opponents do battle for the third time this season. The Chapman Panthers won both of the earlier meetings by 7 and 11 points. They are currently 23-3 and ranked #4 in the West, #24 in the nation and #1 Independent. Senior All Independent players Griffin Ramme and Justin Riley lead the Panthers. They supply a nice inside-outside combo with Ramme lighting it up outside and Riley working hard on the interior. Fellow senior, Max Piner was 5-9 from the field last night to score 12 while Ramme (16) and Riley (10) were both in double figures. The Panthers have exceeded 20 wins a year for the past 6 years and participated in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time last season. They are defending Independent Tournament Champions.

The Slugs were led last night by Ryan Matsuoka’s tournament high 31 points. Brent Jacobs pulled down 12 boards and senior Greg Palmer was a perfect 5-5 from the field for 11 points, mostly off some very slick pick and roll combinations with Sam Allen. Jake Moore was strong on the boards with 5 rebounds while also playing very good defense down low. In what will be the last game in the Slugdome for seniors Darrin Lew, Greg Palmer, Ryan Matsuoka and Brandon Sanchez, the Slugs look to battle for the title. This year’s Slug team has equaled the all time win total for one season for SC with 13. An upset tonight would set the All Time win mark for UC Santa Cruz.
