WALLA WALLA, WA -- The Drought is over in Eastern Washington.
For the first time in school history, the University of California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs won a game in Washington against a team from Washington. Playing back-to-back games for the first time all season, the Banana Slugs came home with a 76-67 victory.
In his best game of the young season senior Brent Jacobs recorded his first double-double of the season, pulling down 11 rebounds and scoring 13 points to go along with 2 steals and a season high 2 blocks. Also scoring double figures were San Allen (16), Tyler Hunt (11) and Nathan Mohri (12).
Coming out quickly, the Slugs pushed the pace early and rolled out to a 16 point lead halfway through the first half. With Jacobs scoring from the inside and Sam Allen bombing from the outside, Santa Cruz was able to counter the inside presence of the Walla Walla Wolves’ Andrew Bailey. Bailey was 6 for 7 from the field, scoring 14 of the Wolves 30 points in the first half. Closing well, the Wolves cut the lead to 10 points at halftime.
The second half would pretty much mirror the first half. For most of the half, the lead would hover around 10 points with the Slugs stretching it out to a maximum of 15 about 12 minutes into the second half. While the lead was never in doubt, Nathan Mohri’s fine touch from the line prevented the Wolves from cutting into the lead. Going to the line for 6 free throws in the last two minutes of the game, Nathan calmly sank each and every one from the charity line, securing the victory.
The upbeat tempo of the Walla Walla game allowed the Slugs to have a season best for rebounds, blocks and free throw percentage as the Slugs secured their first victory of the young season.
Next up for Santa Cruz is the University of Redlands Tournament scheduled for December 1, 2 and 3 at University of Redlands. The Slugs will open with Arizona Christian at 5:30 on Thursday night. Arizona Christian is currently 1-4 going into a Sunday game with Biola University. The first home game of the year will be against Menlo College on Saturday, December 10 at the Slugdome.
