Despite losing the final three games of the regular season, the Women's Basketball team still made the 2002-2003 Cal Pac Conference playoffs. They'll play their first postseason game on Wednesday; opponent and location to be named.
UCSC -- The Women's Basketball team snapped out of its four-game losing streak on Saturday, crushing the visiting Pioneers of Pacific Union, 66-30. Junior Guard Marcie Haduca scored a season-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Haduca also had 4 steals. Senior Guard Mischa Plunkett had 8 assists and 4 steals. The Slugs had struggled as of late, clearly affected by the loss of leading scorer and three-point threat Junior Guard Rachel Baudler, who's still out with a concussion. UCSC's defense picked up, however, as they held Pacific Union to 32 percent shooting. None of the Pioneers' players scored in double-digits. UCSC's record now stands at 8-12, with a 5-8 record in Conference play. With 5 games left, UCSC is just 1 win away from surpassing last year's total. They'll get their first chance this Friday at Bethany College. Game time is at 5:30 PM.
OAKLAND, CA -- The UCSC Women's Basketball team suffered its third loss in four games on Tuesday, losing at Holy Names College, 59-74. The Slugs suffered from a horrid-shooting first half as they hit on just 7-of-28 shots. Sophomore Center Amanda Brecht had arguably her best game of the season, scoring 18 points with 11 rebounds and 1 block. Junior Guard Marcie Haduca came off the bench to score 15 points, shooting 3-of-5 from downtown. Four Holy Names' Hawks scored in double digits. The team's next game comes this Friday night at home against Dominican College. Game time is set for 7:30 PM.
The UCSC Women's Basketball split their weekend Cal Pac Conference games, falling short at Menlo College, 59-65 on Friday, before destroying Pacific Union College, 81-34 on Saturday. At Atherton, UCSC's Rachel Baudler carried the Banana Slugs against the Oaks of Menlo, going 9 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from downtown as part of a 25 point outburst. Unfortunately the rest of the team was unable to respond; not counting Baudler's effort, UCSC shot just 29 percent from the field. The Oaks, showing a good balance of scoring, shot 46 percent from the field and had four players score in double-digits. The team had a much stronger performance against the Pioneers of Pacific Union. Baudler again lead the team, scoring 19 points and shooting over 50 percent from the field. Baudler also had an impact on the defensive side of the ball, collecting 4 steals for the second straight game. Junior Forward Shannamar Dewey also came up strong, hitting 8 of 11 shots in scoring 18 points. Sophomore Center Amanda Brecht had a team-high 8 rebounds to go along with her 3 steals. The team's record now stands at 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Conference play. Their next game is this Friday night at home at the West Field House. Game time is at 5:30 PM.
The UCSC Women's Basketball Team defeated Occidental College in Los Angeles on December 19, by a score of 57-47. Junior Guard Rachel Baudler again lead UCSC in scoring with 15 points. For the season, Baudler is leading the team in scoring at 14.2 points a game, and is second on the team in rebounds at 5.8. Baudler, with 25 three-pointers through nine games, is on pace to break the UCSC single season record for three-pointers made in a season. That record of 51 was set by Vicki Priuska during the 1987-88 season. Baudler leads UCSC in three-point field goal percentage at 36.8%. The win gives UCSC a 3-game winning streak, and brings their season record to 4-5. The team plays its next game January 10th at Menlo College.
The UCSC Women's Basketball team opened their season 1-1 this past weekend at the David Wells Classic host by Claremont Mudd-Scripps. In their opener, the team defeated Ponoma Pitzer, 70-64. UCSC overcame a 34-point effort by the Sagehens' Tamara Kislak to open their season at 1-0. Junior Guard Rachel Baudler lead the team with 18 points, shooting 4 of 7 from downtown. Junior Forward Shannamar Dewey had 12 points and 6 rebounds. In Game 2, UCSC narrowly came up short against host Claremont Mudd-Scripps, losing 61-66. Baudler once again came up strong, leading UCSC with 15 points and five rebounds, but Claremont had 15 steals and shot better than the Banana Slugs at the free throw line to drop UCSC to 1-1. This is a critical year for the team, coming off arguably their best season in 2001-2002. Though they finished at 8-17 overall, the team qualified for the NAIA Cal Pac Conference playoffs with a conference record of 7-6 in only their first year competing in the conference.
