November 17, 2007 Women's Basketball Falls To La Verne 70-64
In the second day of the So Cal Tip-Off Tournament, the UCSC Women's Basketball team falls to the University of La Verne in a close battle, 70-64. After defeating Pomona-Pitzer the previous night, the Slugs faced 2007-08 SCIAC Champions La Verne. SCIAC Player of the Year and Pre-Season nominated All-American Trenecca Jones was too much for the Slugs to handle. Jones finished the night with 34 points.
The entire game was a back and forth battle and the Slugs fought hard. They were lead once again by Junior guard Kayleigh Calandri. Calandri had another great shooting night, finishing the game with 23 points, shooting over 50% once again from the field. Calandri was followed by Melissa Junge who finished the night with 12 points. Overall, the Slugs began their season with a strong showing. It was the first time under four year head coach Nikki Turner, that they won their opening season game. Next the Slugs will travel to San Rafael to face NAIA Dominican University on Tuesday, November 20th at 5:30pm. |
