Todd is entering his third season with UCSC from Seattle University where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach. Prior to Seattle Todd was at La Salle High School in Yakima, Wash. where he was the Dean of Students, a teacher, and the head girls Basketball Coach. In five seasons he compiled a record of 106-23. He led his team to a class B State Championship in 2006 and was named Seattle Times Washington State B Girls Coach of the Year. He was awarded the same honor in 2007 as well when he led his team to a state runner-up finish. Todd was also the coach of the Eastern Washington All-State Girls Team in the summers of 2006 and 2007. He has also made coaching stops at Highland HS, Rosalia HS, Lind HS, and South Puget Sound Community College.

Todd is a graduate of Eastern Washington University where he earned his degree in Recreation and Leisure Service Management. He received his master’s degree in teaching from Heritage University in 2003. Kent enjoys hiking with his family and mountain biking the many wonderful trails in the Santa Cruz area, with his wife Stephanie, who is a Pediatric RN Supervisor at Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Santa Cruz The Kents welcomed their second daughter, Hazel Lou in December 2011. They also have two dogs, Hobbs and Daisy.

Assistant Coaches

Earl Cowell moved to Santa Cruz from the Chicago area in spring, 2010 and is entering his second season with the UC Santa Cruz women’s basketball team. Earl has many years of basketball experience as a player and coach. His professional career was in human resources in industry and service companies. Earl is a graduate of Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio and holds a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).

Earl is married to Julia, a retired nursing professor. They have three grown children and four grandchildren. In addition to basketball, Earl enjoys outdoor sports.

Coach Susan Shapiro has been coaching basketball competitively since 1989. She has created programs founded on fundamentals and driven by creating passion in each program. Susan emphasizes the value of the game and has challanged the team to be academically sound. Her teams throughout the last eight years have maintained a grade point averages of 3.8. In March of 2005 she opened up and was the Head Coach of a successful AAU program that competed at the strongest level of competition. Her record to date with this program is 95-20. She took this success and put her efforts into a high school program where she experienced success and was coaching top level players to move them to the next level. At the close of this she ended with a record of 44-8.

With the exposure thus far that Susan has to the high school athlete and the abundance of tournaments and players wanting to excel and play at the next level on the West Coast; it is our hope that this will open the door for more opportunity and growth for our program.

Academically Susan has a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Law and graduated in June 2010 with a Masters Degree in Recreational Science with an emphasis in Coaching Education. Her intent is to continue and obtain her PhD. She is married with three children.

Coach Green prepped at Arch Bishop Mitty High School in San Jose California. Jenna moved on to play collegiately at UC Santa Barbara and briefly played professionally in Spain.

Coach Green started her coaching career while in college working with local AAU and High School programs. She spent one season as the Girls High School Co-Head Coach at Providence Hall in Santa Barbara. Coach Green has also worked with numerous camps while playing at UCSB. After graduating from UCSB she completed a coaching internship with Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball. Jenna currently works with the Bay Area Basketball Academy working with boys and girls grades 5th-12th in clinic, group, and individual basketball settings.
