Mike Runeare, in his second season as head coach of the Slugs, brings vast experience as both a head coach and as a former player. As a coach, the New York native boasts an extensive resume, including an “A” license from the United States Soccer federation as well as a “Premier” license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He is also the former head coach of the Santa Cruz Breakers U-16 Academy team, Santa Cruz Breakers NPSL team, and is the current head coach of the Santa Cruz Breakers U-18 Academy team.
As a player, Mike played four years at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, captaining the team in 1984. He went on to play professionally for the Houston Dynamo in 1985 and for the Kalamazoo Kangaroos in 1986 as part of the American Indoor Soccer Association. Mike was the UCSC Head Women’s Coach from 2002-2008 where he led the team to an outstanding four NCAA post-season appearances. In his first year with the men’s team in 2009, Mike once again was able to bring his team to the NCAA tournament.

Assistant Coach - Men's Soccer
In his second season with the Slugs, Dave brings a depth
of playing experience to the team. Dave graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2006
with a degree in Business and Economics, where he was a three year starting
central midfielder, and served and team captain in his senior year. In 2004
Dave helped to lead the Slug to an appearance in the NCAA Final Four and a National
Runners Up finish. In 2006 Dave captained the Slugs to a 21-2 record and an
appearance in the NCAA tournament's round of 16. In
addition to his successful
college career, Dave has stared for the Semi-Professional San Jose Frogs, and
spent several months playing with Arminia Bieiefeld of the German Bundesliga.
Dave is currently a Head Coach for the Santa Cruz County Breakers, the Harbor
High School girls varsity team, and is the Director of the Catalyst Soccer Player
Development Program in Santa Cruz and Monterey County.
DEVON TOMSON
Assistant Coach-Men's Soccer
Devon, a native of New York comes to us with a career in professional coaching and education in his first season with the Slugs. Devon graduated from Springfield College in Massachusetts with a degree in Physical Education and Coaching, where he played 3 seasons including one as Captain. The past four seasons Devon has been the Associate Head Men’s Coach, and Women’s Assistant at Bard College in Red Hook NY.
Devon has spent his past on the east coast coaching with such organizations as Eastern NY Olympic Development Program, and Middlepath Premiere FC coaching several successful teams in his young career. Currently Devon is pursuing his Masters Degree in Physical Education and Coaching, and is Co-Director of the Catalyst Soccer Player Development Program here in Santa Cruz.

Volunteer Assistant Coach - Men's Soccer
Aaron is a former NCAA Division I and professional player.
As a collegiate player he was a starting center back for Oregon State University.
Following college he played professionally both indoor - in the CISL and NPSL
- and outdoor - in the A-League and Bolivian 1st Division. He earned his BA
in economics from Oregon State, an MA in economics from Southern Methodist,
and recently completed his Ph.D in Resource Economics at Texas A&M where
he also assisted with the Women's Soccer Program. Aaron currently holds his
USSF "B" license and works as an economist for the National Marine
Fisheries Service in Santa Cruz.
