Men's Soccer Finishes Regular Season vs CSU Hayward

HAYWARD, CA -- The Men's Soccer team closed its regular season with a loss at CSU Hayward on Saturday, watching its record fall to 11-5-2.

Hayward's Adam Ivankovic scored his 16th goal of the season in the 65th minute, and UCSC couldn't respond despite getting eight shots on goal, including three by Freshman Forward Marcus Hammel.

The team still has hopes for a postseason berth, and will find out Sunday if it will make its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.

The team has had a fantastic season in many areas. In 18 matches, UCSC gave up only 10 goals for the year, breaking the school record of 12 set last season. They had a school-best 11 shutouts, ranking them one of the best defensive teams in the country. At one point, UCSC had gone eight matches without surrendering a goal.

During preseason play, the team shocked Division I San Jose State, 1-0 in Spartan Stadium. The team then opened their season beating another DI, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 1-0. Against Division II CSU Stanislaus, four different UCSC players would score in a 4-0 route.

One year after losing all-time assists leader Brendon Taguinod to graduation, the team appears set at striker for years to come. Freshmen Forwards Marcus Hammel and Bryan Baird lead the team with 24 and 19 points, respectively. Hammel had two three-goal hat tricks, and at times dazzled teammates, opponents and fans alike with an assortment of moves with the ball. Baird was second on the team in goals(7), assists(5) and points. Junior Midfielder Kevin Anderson lead the team in assists(6) and was third in points(16). Starting Goalkeeper Daniel Chamberlain finished with a .522 goals against average.

Perhaps most encouraging is the team's youth. Hammel and Baird are only Freshmen, and the team will only lose two players, Seniors Austin Roman and Jordan Trigg, next season to graduation.

Congratulations to the entire team on what has already been an outstanding year.

Men's Soccer ties CSU Hayward, 1-1

SANTA CRUZ -- The UCSC Men's Soccer team ended up tying CSU Hayward on Friday, in a matchup of two of the western region's best teams.

After going the first 76 minutes of the match without seeing a goal, a sudden offensive flurry would erase the zeroes from the scoreboard but could do nothing to decide a result.

Gorhis Robels scored in the 77th minute to give CSU Hayward a 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute-and-a-half later, UCSC Midfielder Josh Lederer scored off of an assist by Freshman Forward Preston Greene to tie the game.

The physical nature of the match was indicated by a combined 44 fouls and 4 yellow cards.

The team's record now stands at 10-3-2 with three tough matches remaining, all of them on the road.

For their next match, the team will head down to Chapman on Friday, and will finish with matches at Cal Lutheran and then a rematch at Hayward.

Notes: The goal was Lederer's sixth on the year, making him UCSC's 3rd leading goal scorer behind the Freshmen duo of Marcus Hammel and Bryan Baird.

Men's Soccer winning streak snapped against Alliant International

SANTA CRUZ -- The UCSC Men's Soccer team saw their nine-game unbeaten streak end on Sunday in a 2-1 loss to Alliant International University at the lower east field.

Freshman Forward Bryan Baird scored his seventh goal of the season just 8 minutes into the game, but Alliant would tie it up in the second half on a goal by Duane Minor to send it into sudden-death overtime.

With just over a minute left in the second overtime period, Junior Defender Nick Kowba was ejected on a controversial red card.

Moments later, Alliant scored on a corner kick by Chris Brunson, and UCSC's winning streak was over.

Prior Minor's goal, UCSC had gone eight games without giving up a goal, and the team has still only had 7 goals scored against it for the season. The school record for the fewest goals given up is 12, set just last year. Starting Goalkeeper Daniel Chamberlain still boasts an impressive 0.453 goals against average.

The team's record now stands at 10-3-1.

UCSC now has 4 critical games left which may determine their standings for selection to the NCAA Championships. Their next game is this Friday at home against CSU Hayward. Match start time is set for 3:00 PM.

Notes: Baird's goal in the first half gave Junior Midfielder Kevin Anderson a team-high six assists for the season.

Hammel leads Men's Soccer past Menlo 4-0

SANTA CRUZ -- The UCSC Men's Soccer team continued its unbeaten streak on Thursday, topping Menlo College 4-0.

Freshamn Forward Marcus Hammel scored 3 goals in a 11-minute timespan during the first half. Junior Midfielder Josh Lederer added another goal in the second half, as Menlo College never threatened.

Hammel, just 13 games into his career at UC Santa Cruz, has already scored 11 goals and accumulated 23 points. Fellow Freshman Forward Bryan Baird also continued his strong play, assisting on Hammel's second goal. Baird is second in points for UCSC with 15.

The team has not given up a goal since the second half of a game against Fontbonne College on September 12. That game was the starting point of a nine-game unbeaten streak which has seen the Slugs win eight games and earn a draw against then-number 1 ranked University of Redlands. During that stretch, UCSC has outscored its opponents by an incredible 30-1 margin.

Against Menlo, the Slugs didn't even allow a shot on goal.

For the season, the team has only given up 5 goals and has just five matches left in their season. The school-record for fewest goals allowed was set by last year's squad with 12. Senior Goalkeeper Daniel Chamberlain has an unpredented .327 goals against average this season, having given up only 4 goals in 1100 minutes of playing time.

The team plays its next game this Sunday against Alliant International. Match start time is set for 12:00 PM.

Men's Soccer crushes Fontbonne; has huge weekend ahead

SANTA CRUZ -- The UCSC Men's Soccer team had an easy time of it against Fontbonne of St. Louis, MO on Thursday, as the Banana Slugs cruised to a 6-1 victory.

Freshman Forwards Bryan Baird and Marcus Hammel each had two goals and Juniors Josh Lederer and Erik Gibbs each added one apiece. UCSC outshot Fontbonne 20-3, and jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Fontbonne scored against UCSC's backup goalkeeper Joshua Holtrust off a corner kick in the 75th minute.

The match was physical throughout; UCSC was issued 4 yellow cards and was called on 18 fouls.

The team's record now stands at 3-2, including UCSC's historic victory against Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The team plays its next game on Friday against Cal Tech at 1 PM at thee Lower East Field on the UCSC campus.

On Sunday, the team hosts #1 University of Redlands. UCSC won last year's regular season meeting at Redlands before losing to the Bulldogs 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, snapping UCSC's 15-game unbeaten streak.

Redlands would go on to the final before losing to eventual National Champion Williams College.

Men's Soccer splits at Puget Sound; now 2-2 on the season

TACOMA, WA -- The UCSC Men's Soccer team split two key Division III matches this weekend, easily disposing of George Fox University, 5-0 on Friday, before losing to host Puget Sound, 2-0 on Sunday.

Freshman Forward Marcus Hammel led dominating attack on Friday against George Fox. Hammel, showing the skilled that made him UCSC's prized recruit, scored three goals in the first half for a hat trick. Freshman Forward Bryan Baird and Junior Forward Barr Haney added two more goals.

Senior Forward Austin Roman assisted on two of Hammel's goals.

It was a different story against Puget Sound, however. The Loggers scored the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute off a penalty kick by Chris Raymond and Josh Hendrick scored off a rebound in the 43rd minute to give UPS the victory. Both teams recorded 13 shots on goal. Two shots by UCSC Freshman Bryan Baird just glanced off the goal post.

The team's somewhat dissapointing start may bear good tidings if recent history is any judge. Last season, the Slugs started 0-2 before reeling off a school record 16-game unbeaten streak. They would make the NCAA Playoffs for only the second time in school history before losing to eventual finalist University of Redlands.

UCSC plays its next match this Thursday at home against Fontbonne. Start time is set for 1:00 PM.

Men's Soccer stuns Cal Poly; opens season 1-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Another week, another upset.

Just five days after defeating San Jose State in their preseason finale, the UCSC Men's Soccer team delivered a stunning loss to Division I Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo Friday night, winning 1-0.

The Banana Slugs defeated the Mustangs despite being outshot 18-7. Senior Goalkeeper Daniel Chamberlain had 7 saves, including a stop against Cal Poly's Ramon Manak off of a penalty kick.

Cal Poly made a crucial error in the 26th minute, as sophomore midfielder J.J. Young was ejected after a red card. The Mustangs were forced to play the rest of the game with 10 players.

Lederer, who hails from Santa Monica, had 5 goals and 13 points last year.

UCSC (1-0) will face a much easier opponent this Tuesday when they play CSU Monterey Bay in their home opener.

Men's Soccer shocks San Jose State in preseason scrimmage

SAN JOSE, CA -- In one of the greatest upsets in the team's history, the Men's Soccer team defeated Division I San Jose State, 1-0 Sunday night in a preseason match held at Spartan Stadium.

Junior Defender Nick Kowba scored off a header in the 38th minute to give UCSC the lead. Junior Midfielder Kevin Anderson was credited with the assist.

UCSC was the aggressor throughout the contest. The Banana Slugs outshot the Spartans 14 to 6, and allowed only one shot on goal. UCSC's offense finished with eight shots on goal. UCSC dominated in shots despite San Jose State holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Though it will not go down on their official record, the win marks a tremendous improvement in the quality of UCSC's program. Last year, the team lost 2-1 to SJSU, the year before losing 6-0.

Kowba, from Encinitas, California, had five goals and ten points for the Banana Slugs last season.

UCSC opens its regular season this Friday at Division I Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo.
