News from 2007 - 2008 Season

Season Preview

The UC Santa Cruz Men’s Soccer Program is looking forward to another successful fall this year.  After earning a birth into the round of 16 of the NCAA playoffs with a record of 21-2 last year and leading the Nation in Goals Against Average and Shutouts, the Slugs are looking to build on that performance and return themselves to the Final Four.  Having only lost 4 players to graduation last season the Slugs feel that they have the talent and the experience to compete for a National Championship.

The 2007 Slugs will be lead by an extremely talented senior class.  The class of 2007 includes D3kicks All-American, Goalkeeper Jared Wheeler; DIII Independent Player of the Year, D3Kicks All-American, and NSCAA All-Region team member Alex Tocco; 2005 NSCAA All-Region team member Adam Smarte; DIII All-Independent defender and Team Captain Jeremy Abrams; DIII All-Independent forward Harry Abraham; DIII All-Independent midfielder Anthony Scarlett; as well as midfielder Stefan Clemens and Team Captain, Matt Skenazy.

Joining the 2007 Slugs will be a host of energetic, hungry and talented incoming players.  With his first recruiting class, Head Coach Dan Chamberlain has assembled some of the top players in the Western Region, and expects all of them to make an impact in 2007!

Colin Ainsworth:  Colin is an extremely gifted midfielder, with great vision, passing ability and is a goal scoring threat from the midfield.  Colin joins the Slugs from John Hopkins University where he was a starting midfielder in 2006.  Originally from Davis, CA Colin was a top recruit for the Slugs in 2006 before choosing John Hopkins.  The Slugs are extremely excited to welcome Colin, as he should be an immediate impact in the midfield.

Evan Chambers:  Evan is a very athletic, and active midfielder with great vision.  Coming from the Santa Rosa United Club, and Cardinal Newman High School, Evan was the energy in both midfields giving both teams great work-rate, and physical presence.  Seemingly all over the pitch, Evan embodies the type of blue-collar work that defines UCSC Soccer.  In addition to his talents on the field, Evan was named a High School Academic All-American by the NSCAA for his work in the classroom!

Matt Fondy:  Matt is a very athletic, large forward.  Coming from Burlingame High School, Matt was athlete of the year, and lead his team to a No. 1 seed in the NCS tournament.  In addition to his great size and athleticism, Matt is extremely gifted with the ball at his feet, and has a great nose for goal.  Matt will add some depth to the forward line, as well as provide the Slugs with an immediate goal scoring threat!

Harrison Foster:  Harrison is a large, very athletic central defender.  Coming from Southern California’s Real SoCal Club, Harrison is a very experienced defender who has played at the highest levels of club soccer.  Competing in the Coast Premier League, as well as the top tournaments in the Western US, Harrison brings great experience as a freshman.

DJ Hill:  DJ is a very athletic defender, who can play anywhere in the back.  DJ comes to UCSC from the South Bay Soccer Club, and San Dimas, CA, and will bring some depth to the Slugs Nation leading defense.  A great communicator, DJ comes ready to lead from the back!

Michael Markunas:  Michael is a gifted midfield player!  Standing at 6 feet tall, in addition to his skill with the ball, he is also a physical presence!  Coming off of a knee injury Michael will spend this season getting back on his feet, and physically preparing himself.  However, the Slugs will expect great things from him in the future.

CJ Villalobos:  CJ is an amazing attacking player, gifted with good speed, and great 1v1 ability, CJ will add danger to the Slug attack in 2007.  Coming from Whittier, CA CJ was Captain of his high school team as well as a leader for his club team playing in the COAST Premier League.  In addition to his abilities on the field, CJ has a great love for the game of soccer having lived in London for several years.  CJ will add depth and danger to the Slugs wide attack this year.

The 2007 Slugs will face off against some of the top Division III teams in the Western Region this fall including Linfield, University of Redlands, Gustavus Adolphus, Augsburg, and Cal Lutheran.  In addition the Slugs will travel to Cal State San Marcos, and San Jose State for some non-DIII competition.  With the goal of brining home the National Championship, Coach Chamberlain believes that the Slugs have the experience and the talent to accomplish that goal in 2007!
