Seltzer's Golden Goal Leads Slugs Past Chapman

The UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team was able to accomplish what no other NCAA Division III team has been able to do this year. With a "golden goal" from Dan Seltzer (SO, San Ramon, CA) the Slugs beat undefeated Chapman University at the Lower East Field on Friday, September 26th.

The Slugs started well with Clay Sorensen (JR, San Rafael, CA) putting the Slugs in front in the 2nd minute with his third goal in as many games. It is the second game running that the Slugs have scored in the first minutes of the game. Through out the half the Slugs dominated possession and could have been up several goals as the Chapman goalkeeper, Tyler Hadzinsky made several quality saves. The Slugs out shot the Pathers 8-0 in the first half but failed to add to their 2nd min tally.

After half time the Pathers came out looking to take the game back, and were able to pull level with the Slugs in the 50th min when Dean Sewitz scored from 20 yards out beating Slugs goalkeeper Matt Mahowald (JR, Redando Beach, CA).

With the score notched at one a piece the game headed to overtime. The third overtime game the Slugs have been in this year. However, unlike the two other overtime games, the Slugs took the advantage with Seltzer winning the game.

The win moves the Slugs to 4-3-2 on the year and is their 3rd win in a row.

"This was the most important game of the year for us" said Head Coach Dan Chamberlain. "As a fellow Division III independent, Chapman is one of our biggest rivals. We both know that these are must win games, and they are always hard fought. I think that our guys showed a lot of character today in battling through and finding a way to win today."

The Slugs travel to Humboldt State for a non Division III game on Sunday. They then return home to face another Division III independent school Cal State East Bay on Wednesday at 1pm on the Lower East Field.
