September 3, 2008 Slugs Go 1-1 In Iowa
SANTA CRUZ - In their first ever road trip to Iowa, the UC Santa Cruz men's soccer team returned with a record of 1-1. Playing the two top teams in Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Loras and Wartburg, the young Slugs put in two solid performances to open the season.
Against Loras, ranked 3rd in the nation, the Slugs started slow and were punished in the 30th min, when Santiago Mejia scored, unassisted from the top of the penalty box. However, the young Slugs responded well with a great second half of soccer, putting the Duhawks under pressure, and creating several very good scoring opportunities. The best falling to Sophomore, Forward Matt Fondy which was well saved by Loras Keeper Nate NuBois. The Slugs continued their good form against a very dangerous and talented Wartburg team, an NCAA tournament team last year. The Slugs came out and defended very well, and while their attack was blunted by a very hard working Wartburg team, the Slugs found a break through and their first goal of the year through Matt Fondy. Fondy scoring an unassisted goal in the 77th min, off of a broken play in front of goal. After losing 12 players to graduation and transfers last year, the 2008 Slugs are a completely new team and are looking to build on their solid performance in Iowa against Cal Lutheran in their home opener on Thursday, September 4th. |
