Men's Soccer Knocks Off No. 6 UC-Santa Cruz
SHERMAN, TX -- The Austin College men’s soccer team made its final home match of the season a memorable one, getting two first half goals from Chris Melton as the ’Roos stunned the No. 6 ranked University of California-Santa Cruz on Saturday to improve to 5-8-1 overall this season. The ’Roos are 4-0-1 in their last four games.
UC-Santa Cruz came out aggressive early, wasting little time getting on the scoreboard when Matt Fondy tallied just 1:56 into the game. However, the ’Roos quickly countered when Melton collected a rebound off of a shot by Luis Castillo and punched it in just 37 seconds later to tie things up.
That remained the score until the 29th minute when Castillo sent a pass through the UC-Santa Cruz defense and Melton managed to push it past Banana Slugs keeper Matt Mahowald to give Austin College the 2-1 edge heading into halftime.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half, but the ’Roos stepped up defensively with strong play from keeper Grant Gosselin along with defenders consistently stepping in front of UC-Santa Cruz players to deflect shots and clear the ball to help preserve the victory.
Gosselin and Mahowald each stopped three shots as the Banana Slugs owned a 23-14 shot advantage in the game. This was just the second loss of the season for UC-Santa Cruz.
Austin College will look to continue its current hot streak when the team travels to Conway, Arkansas to take on Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Hendrix College next Friday with game time set for 6:00 p.m.
