Slugs Kick Off Campaign with Convincing Win

The UC Santa Cruz women’s soccer team opened its season Tuesday by slamming Holy Names College of Oakland, 10-2. The Slugs dominated early, scoring the game’s first four goals.

They never looked back.

"They worked hard in the pre-season for this win," said Slug’s rookie head coach Mike Runeare. "We passed our first test as a team."

Senior forward Skye Vendt-Pearce led the Slug’s offensive attack with four goals. Sophomore Caitlin Carpenter added two goals. Sophomore Slug goalie Kirsten Horn had two saves.

"It feels pretty good to open the season with a game like that," said junior co-captain Sarah Dixon. "It gives us some confidence going into our road trip."

The Slugs travel to Puget Sound, Washington this weekend to face Whitman College on Friday and the University of Puget Sound on Sunday. "This weekend is a bigger test for us," said Runeare. "We’re going to have to bump it up a notch to beat Puget Sound."
