| September 23, 2004 Slugs Invade Oregon SALEM, OR -- The Slug Women's Soccer team has traveled over 2,500 miles in the past week playing a total of 5 games in 8 days. Most of those miles came from this past weekend when the Slugs went up to Oregon to play against Willamette and Linfield. And if there was to be an upset victory in the Slugs' schedule this year, Willamette was the one. Home of former Athletic Director Mark Majeski, Willamette's numbers going into the game were intimidating; they were the #10 ranked team in the country - the highest ranking team on this year's schedule. On Friday afternoon, the Slugs arrived at a field with unfamiliar weather conditions and a home-field advantage that helped the Bearcats win 74 straight games. (That's over 7 seasons of undefeated soccer on that field!) And it took our Slugs only 23 minutes to break that streak as Claire Gustafson set up Caitlin Carpenter for the game's only goal. The Slug defense, anchored by Paige Alumbaugh, Ivy Whitford, Megan Cox, and Rachel Maxwell-Jolly kept it tight for the remaining 67 minutes of play while the Bearcats went on to outshoot the Slugs 12-9. Freshman keeper Katie Loomis' 4 saves on the game helped seal the deal as the Slugs went on to upset the Bearcats 1-0, this was the 4th shutout for Loomis. The Slugs went on the play Linfield College on Sunday afternoon where Carpenter was unstoppable, scoring the only 2 UCSC goals -- the first coming in the 31st minute and the second coming in double overtime, where Carpenter broke a 1-1 tie to give the Slugs their 3rd straight victory. The Slug defense held strong once again and Katie Loomis had another 4 saves, bringing her to 36 on the season. A great road trip for the Slugs, it was a complete team effort as the Slugs came together and believed in each other for two big wins on the season. With a record of 5-2-1, the Slugs have now moved up into the NSCAA rankings as they hold the #8 spot in the West Region. |
