Slugs Go Undefeated for the Season with a 2-0 Vicotory Over CSU East Bay

The UCSC Women’s Soccer team knew their final game of the regular season would not be an easy battle as they took to the field to face Independent rival CSU East Bay – Hayward, (12-4). Hayward has had a strong season coming into the match with a record of 12-4 and a recent 2-1 win over Chapman University.

The Lady Slugs played well in the first fifteen minutes but couldn’t seem to convert in the final
offensive third, leaving the score at 0-0 heading into half time. UCSC took control of the game immediately in the 2nd half by bringing the ball out of the air and play slug style soccer - quick ball movement, creative combinations, dynamic runs, and solid defense.

Two Freshman combined for the initial goal of the match. Miranda Emanuel found Wendy Funk breaking down the left side line in the 51st minute. Wendy took an excellent first touch towards the goal and cut it to her right foot for a brilliant finish at the top of the 18 yard box. Wendy has proven to be great spark off the bench this season netting 5 key goals thus far. Forward Alec Drew collected a loose ball in the midfield in the 72nd minute. She shot the ball right off of her turn, catching the Hayward keeper off guard, as it sailed in for the final goal of the match.

The UCSC defensive unit was rock-solid once again. Center backs Megan Cox and Shelby Stillians had tremoundous performances both covering breakaways, clearing corners, and organizing the defense for Hayward’s set pieces. Katie Hayden and CallieHajosy did an extraordinary job shutting down Haywards outside forwards, winning many headers and 50/50 battles. Junior keeper Katie Loomis grabbed 3 crucial saves to record her 13th shutout of the
season.

This 2-0 win over Hayward wraps up the regular season for the UCSC Women’s Soccer team with an undefeated record of 15-0-3. The Lady Slugs will be awarded with a playoff spot for this remarkable success . Details will be announced on Monday, November 6th.
