UC Santa Cruz Records 11th Shut Out of the Season

UC Santa Cruz records 11th Shut Out of the Season with
a 3-0 victory over Holy Names. Ranked 1st in the West and 8th in the Nation, Division III UC Santa Cruz took on NAIA opponent Holy Names University. Both teams played high pressure defense and looked to combine through the middle. However, it was the Lady Slugs that were able to take advantage of the wind in their favor in the second half.

Freshman Katie VonBeroldingen scored her second goal of the season by collecting the ball after a Holy Names loss of possession in the box and slotting the ball past the keeper near post in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Annick Lamb scored her 10th goal of the season in the 80th minute. She was able to beat two defenders and rip a shot from the top of the 18 yard box to put the Slugs up 2-0. Only three minutes later, Annick found Freshman Wendy Funk making a back door run. Funk took advantage of her opportunity and finished on her first touch with a volley into the back of the net.

Holy Names keeper Kayce Garcia had 4 saves in the match. Diana Lakeland recorded her 4th shutout of the season. This win moves UC Santa Cruz to 10-0-3 on the season. The Lady Slugs will be put to the test as they take on Division III University of Dallas, who made it to the NCAA playoffs last year, this Friday at 3pm on the East Remote Field of UC Santa Cruz.
