October 3, 2007 Women's Soccer End In A Tie Against Division II Monterey Bay MONTEREY, CA – The UCSC Women’s Soccer move to 5-2-2 on the season as they come away with a 1-1 tie versus Division II opponent CSU Monterey Bay. It was the Lady Slugs who struck first, putting one away early in the 7th minute of play. After a good build up through the midfield, the ball was switched to right outside back Sophomore Katie Hayden. She had a great first touch and played Junior Alec Drew down the line. Drew used her speed and technically ability to get in past two defenders slicing a cross into the box. Senior Danielle Mullen made a back door run and finished first time with a brilliant volley. The Slugs continued to dominate the first half, out shooting the Otters 6 to 1 and controlling much of the possession. Junior Annick Lamb looked to strike next when she was able to beat the keeper at the top of the 18-yard box. She fired her shot through a crowd and it was barely cleared of the goal line by a CSUMB defender. With two minutes to go before half time, a ball slipped behind the CSUMB defense and Melanie Matthews ran onto it, got a touch and pushed it past the keeper. However, the goal was called off when the referee stated that Matthews had fouled the keeper with her run after the play. UCSC entered the second half with the wind at their backs. The Slugs were able to generate five corner kicks but just couldn’t seem to execute. However, it CSUMB, who came out high-pressuring everywhere, that were able to tie the game up in the 50th minute. They scored in the same fashion, finding Amber Spencer wide left who drove the ball to the end line where she was able to get a cross off. Spencer connected with Sarah Anderson on the top of the six-yard box far post who sliced it past UCSC Senior Keeper Katie Loomis. Loomis had 4 saves on the day. The Lady Slugs continued to battle on through two ten minute overtime periods, generating two more corner kicks, but the match ended in a 1-1 tie. The UCSC Women’s soccer team will take to the field this Sunday October 7th as they will pair up with the Men’s team for a double header versus |
