November 10, 2007 Women's Soccer Falls to Whitworth in Overtime 2-1 TACOMA, Wash. - Kimberly Mitchell knocked in the game-winner just 1:19 into the first overtime as the Whitworth Pirates pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. The Banana Slugs (12-3-2) struck first when Annick Lamb dribbled up the left side in the 24th minute and beat Pirate keeper Krista Dietez. The Pirates evened it up in the 37th minute when Lindsey Oakes was able to gain possession of the ball following a strong save by UCSC keeper Katie Loomis.Neither team was able to score in overtime but Whitworth needed just two shots in the first overtime to collect the 2-1 win as Mitchell was able to gain possession out of a scrum in the middle of the box and put in the game winner. Loomis finished the game with six saves while Dietz was forced to make just one save in the win. The Pirates outshot the Slugs 16-10. |
