Lady Slugs Conquer the Panthers with a 2-0 Victory ORANGE, CA -- The UC Women’s Soccer team move to 9-2-2 and take another big step forward towards a chance for a NCAA playoff birth with a very important 2-0 win. The victory over Chapman University improves the Banana Slugs unbeaten streak to eight straight games (7-0-1).The atmosphere was set - a Friday Night game at Wilson Field under the lights with Division III Independent Rival Chapman University (7-7-2). The Lady Slugs were fired up and came out strong in the first ten minutes. The offensive line consisting of forwards, Senior Danielle Mullen, Junior Annick Lamb, and Junior Alec Drew, and offensive midfielders Senior Didi Ramirez and Sophomore Jacki Belton, were a dynamic group. They controlled the pace of the game, keeping the play on Chapman’s half of the field, with good passing combinations and off the ball runs, creating many dangerous opportunities in the front of Chapman’s goal. The Lady Slugs outshot the Panthers 20-4 and obtained 7 corner kicks to Chapman’s 2. It was the UCSC who snapped a scoreless tie at 64:05 on a goal from Sophomore Kira Ticus, giving the Slugs a 1-0 lead. Junior Morgan McCarthy sent in a lofting corner kick, which Ticus fired low past Chapman GK Junior Madison Coffin. Less than nine minutes later, Freshman Jacki Blaugrund scored an insurance goal for Santa Cruz with a shot into the upper right corner chipping the keeper from 35 yards out. Senior Katie Loomis made one save on the day. Loomis and her defensive line have only allowed one goal and obtained seven shutouts in the past eight games. The Lady Slugs will be back in action this Sunday, October 21st in their second game of two on this Los Angeles trip as they take on Whittier College at 1 pm. |
