2008 Season Preview
SANTA CRUZ - The UC Santa Cruz Women’s Soccer Team is looking forward to the upcoming fall season. They are working extremely hard to return to the NCAA post season for a third straight year. Ranked 25th nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America pre season poll, the lady slugs will be lead by Senior NSCAA All –American Co-Captain Forward Annick Lamb, senior Co- Captain Forward Alec Drew and senior Defender Shelby Stillians. This season’s game schedule will be very challenging. They will have an opportunity to avenge two of their losses from last season when they host Whitworth College in early Sept. And travel to Claremont Mudd Scripts in Oct. Those two games, along with very important games against Redlands University, who is visiting Santa Cruz in Sept and Cal State East Bay and Chapman University who are both DIII West Independents will greatly determine the Slugs post season opportunities. A very talented group of upperclassmen should help fill the void that was created after the graduation of last year’s 4 senior All-West region players. Leading this talented group are juniors Mid Fielder Karli Cowman, Forward Kira Ticus, Midfielder Jackie Belton, Forward Wendy Funk, Forward Katie Von Beroldingen and Defender Holly Sinclair. Returning for their second season are sophomore defender Greta Brandt, Mid Fielder Erica Wheeler Dubin, Midfielder Jackie Blaugrund, Midfielder Danielle Green, Mid fielder Sofia Juarez, forward Sara Damert and Goalkeepers Elle Vermillion and Janneke Lang. Four extremely talented freshmen are expected to compete right away for playing time. They are, Midfielder Adrianna Moosekian, mid fielder Chloe Rose, Defender Tess Braun and Defender Sonja Arndt. The Lady Slugs have been one of the top teams in the West Region the past several seasons, it will be extremely important for them to establish their identity early this fall to continue their dominance. We would like to invite you out to one of our games this fall, come see for yourself what all the excitement is about.
