Women's Soccer's own Katie Loomis's View On Her Pro-Tryout - "Believing In Myself"

katie vb
As funny as it is, I haven't always thought about playing pro. I didn't even think I could play in college, which is one of the major things pushing me now. Everything I have done at one point I thought I couldn't, but a little belief from my family and coaches distilled belief and confidence in me so that now I know I can compete and now I want it more than ever. I want little girls everywhere to see that all it takes is a little belief in yourself and you can do anything. So that's one of the reasons I want to play pro.

I mainly want to play because soccer is my life. I have so much passion for the game I am always trying to improve my own game or help improve others which is why I got into coaching. That's why being able to continue to play a game I love and help encourage soccer to become more main stream would be incredible.

My name is Katie Loomis. I was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. I have played soccer since I was a kid but did not get serious until I was a freshman in high school, which is when I started to play goalkeeper. I ended up going to UC Santa Cruz for college where I was very fortunate to play all four years. In those four years I was very lucky to have my team and my coaches who helped to push and develop me as a player leading to some great achievements. I continued to go on and play for the WPSL's San Francisco Nighthawks where I was able to continue my growth at a higher level.

I found out in mid-July when the WPSL Combine was going to be. I wish we would have been told earlier so that I could have gotten the proper training that I really wanted, but regardless I started working hard by doing double day workouts. They usually consisted of some sort of ‘keeper workout in the morning and a run, then the afternoon was sprints or agility work.

This summer was actually very funny as I probably had a total of two trainings where I didn't come home sopping wet. Granted I was training at 7am but I have never seen August be so rainy in Tacoma. One morning I woke up and it was literally raining sideways because it was so windy. My coach and I kept thinking how funny its going to be going from wet slippery sliding balls in 50 degree weather to very dry hot 104 degree weather. We both figure I'm probably going to melt.

After a hard work out, I would take an ice bath to help for a quick recovery of my muscles. I also made sure I was eating right. For breakfast I would always make sure I had fruit whether a smoothie, or yogurt with granola and fruit. I would also have some protein usually sausage and eggs (many omelets and breakfast burritos). Lunch usually consisted of sandwiches. My favorite to make was a caprese sandwich (put a little mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil and balsamic on a toasted baguette, so good). Dinner was always a carb load, most of the times pasta but I would also have chicken or fish.

Now all I have to do is pack and get ready for the Combine.
