SANTA CRUZ, CA.-- This Sunday, the UC Santa Cruz Women’s Soccer team opened up their fall 2010 preseason with a triad of 45 minute scrimmages against northern California’s DII Sonoma State University squad. Santa Cruz finally saw a warm sunny day, and the on-the-field battle remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes.  UC Santa Cruz left wing sophomore Becca Hawkins struck first with a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar out of the keeper’s reach and sailed into the right side-netting off a combo play from her fellow winger and center striker. The Slugs were in the lead at the end of 90 minutes, 1-0. The Sonoma equalizer came late in the third 45 minute period.

Coming off a 12-6 2009 season and graduating seven seniors, the current women’s UCSC team is rebuilding but has set their goals high and are aiming to secure another post-season playoff berth come November.  You can see them in action again this coming Friday at the Lower East field when they take on San Francisco State at 3pm.
