January 10, 2008 Women's Soccer Team Received Several Individual and Team Post-Season Honors for 2007
The UCSC Women’s Soccer Team has received several individual and team post- season honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the DIII Independents Association following there 12-3-2 seasons. Returning to the NCAA post-season championships for the second year in a row the lady slugs took another step towards competing for the DIII Title. All 4 graduating senior players, Katie Loomis, Didi Ramirez, Megan Cox and Danielle Mullen received honors, acknowledgement of their contribution during their four years and the success and prominence that they were able to achieve.
The UCSC Women’s Soccer Team finished the 2007 season ranked 25th in the Nation in the NSCAA final season poll after an evenly contested post-season loss to Whitworth College in overtime. This is the Lady slug’s third NSCAA top 25 ranking in the last 4 seasons. The team recorded 12 shutouts and gave up 11 goals on the season.
Senior, captain, goalkeeper Katie Loomis (Tacoma WA) was awarded with the Goalkeeper of the year award from the Association of DIII Independents. This was Katie’s second selection in that category. Katie’s outstanding shot blocking and vocal leadership on the field helped define her position as among the top keepers in the country. Loomis finished the season with 12 shutouts, 11 goals allowed and 34 saves. Her career consisted of 44 shutouts and 50 games won which set new records at UCSC.
Senior, captain, midfielder Didi Ramirez (Sacramento, CA) was selected to the NSCAA All-West Region 1st Team and to the Association of DIII Independents 2nd Team. Didi’s excellent ball skills and relentless work-rate in midfield helped distinguish herself from fellow competitors. Her consistency helped the lady slugs establish themselves as a dynamic attacking team.
Senior, captain, defender Megan Cox (Alta Loma, CA) was selected for the second time to the NSCAA All-West Region Team. Se1ected to the 1st Team 2006, Cox received 3rd team honors in 07. She was also selected to the Association of DIII Independents 2nd Team (1st Team 2006). Megan’s technical skill combined with relentless defending made her a unanimous choice for the second consecutive season. Following an early season injury, that limited her playing time in the first 8 games, Megan was able to regain her form and help lead her team to a second consecutive post-season appearance.
Senior, forward Danielle Mullen was selected to the NSCAA All-West Region 2nd team and to the Association of DIII Independents Honorable Mention Team. Danielle’s determination and commitment was the catalyst for this teams success. She was willing to work harder than any other player on the field. She was a threat in scoring goals playing in either the wing or center forward position.
Junior, forward Annick Lamb (Santa Barbara, CA) was selected for the second year in a row to the NSCAA All-American Team. Selected to the 2nd team in 06, Lamb received 3rd teams honors for 07. She was also selected to the NSCAA All –West Region 1st Team for the second year in a row and to the Association of DIII Independents 1st Team. Once again Annick demonstrated that she was a threat to score at any moment in the game. Her technical abilities and pure athleticism make her a very difficult attacking player to contain. She recorded 5 game winning goals in 07 raising her career total to.
Sophomore Midfielder Karli Cowman (San Anselmo, CA) was selected to the Association of DIII Independents 2nd Team. Karli’s first post-season recognition comes after a tremendous year playing as the team’s def. Midfielder. Starting in every game in her first two seasons, Karli’s consistency with the ball on offense and dominating play in the air has had an impact on the lady slug’s style of play.
December 12, 2007 Divison III Women's Soccer name All-Independent Teams
Association of Division III Independents Names 2007 All-Independent Women’s Soccer Teams KANSAS CITY, MO.--- Midfielder Christina Quitasol of California State University, East Bay, and forward Elizabeth Clem-Schneider of Salem College were named co-offensive players of the year and headline the All-Independent Women’s Soccer teams named today by the Association of Division III Independents.
Quitasol, a junior from Stockton, Cal., scored 16 goals, including four game winners, in 19 games. Clem-Schneider, a freshman forward from Merced, Cal., scored 13 goals and added 12 assists in 13 games. She helped the Spirits to a 15-1-2 record and scored the game-winning goal in the AD3I Atlantic Region Championship win over Green Mountain College.
Jackie Cruz, a senior defenseman from Alameda, Cal., was named the defensive player of the year after she anchored a defense that recorded six shutouts and allowed only 18 goals all season.
For the second consecutive year, University of California, Santa Cruz, goaltender Katie Loomis was named the goaltender of the year. Loomis, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., notched 12 shutouts and allowed only 11 goals all season. She finished her career with 50 wins and 44 shutouts and was one of the driving forces behind the Banana Slugs appearing in two straight NCAA tournaments.
Freshman defender Georgia Anagnos from La Sierra University was named the rookie of the year, while head coach Damian Houlden from Mitchell College was named the coach of the year.

December 3, 2007 Both UCSC Soccer Programs receive NSCAA Team Academic Award
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- A total of 406 soccer teams (111 men, 295 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2006-2007 academic year. Of that total, UC Santa Cruz is one of the 71 schools that had their Men's and Women's programs both recognized. November 10, 2007 Women's Soccer Falls to Whitworth in Overtime 2-1
TACOMA, Wash. - Kimberly Mitchell knocked in the game-winner just 1:19 into the first overtime as the Whitworth Pirates pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
The Banana Slugs (12-3-2) struck first when Annick Lamb dribbled up the left side in the 24th minute and beat Pirate keeper Krista Dietez. The Pirates evened it up in the 37th minute when Lindsey Oakes was able to gain possession of the ball following a strong save by UCSC keeper Katie Loomis.Neither team was able to score in overtime but Whitworth needed just two shots in the first overtime to collect the 2-1 win as Mitchell was able to gain possession out of a scrum in the middle of the box and put in the game winner.
Loomis finished the game with six saves while Dietz was forced to make just one save in the win. The Pirates outshot the Slugs 16-10.
September 24, 2007 Annick Lamb Receives Independent Player Of The Week For Women's Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of California-Santa Cruz junior forward Annick Lamb (Santa Barbara, Calif.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s soccer Player of the Week. Lamb scored the game-winning goal on Saturday as UC Santa Cruz beat the 21st ranked Chapman Panthers 1-0 in overtime. The goal was Lamb’s fifth of the year and third game-winner. With the win, the Lady Slugs improve to 4-2-1 on the season.
October 28, 2007 UCSC Women's Soccer Come Together, Important 1-0 Win
THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- The Lady Slugs Women’s Soccer team move one step closer to a possible bid to the NCAA Championships with a very important 1-0 victory over Division III Cal Lutheran. Cal Lutheran’s tough defense and speed proved to be a challenge for the Lady Slugs, but UCSC came together and found a way to win.
UCSC tried to make a mark early in the match when Junior Annick Lamb was played in through the Cal Lu defense by Junior Morgan McCarthy. However, Cal Lu Keeper Kristin Borzi came up with a big save on the breakaway. The Lady Slugs continued to push forward out-shooting Cal Lu 18-3 and obtaining 9 corner kicks. The shut-out looked as though it would be broken when Freshman Erica Dubin made her way into the box in the second half, but her shot was just wide of the left post. Once again, it was leading scorer Annick Lamb, who re-entered the game with 15 minutes to go, that took the game into her own hands. She received the ball deep in the left corner, took on two defenders, and fired the ball past the keeper at the top of the six yard box to put away her 5th game winning goal of the season in the 82nd minute.
Senior Didi Ramirez had an outstanding game, leading the team on both sides of the ball. The Lady Slug defense line was anchored by Senior Megan Cox, Junior Shelby Stillians, Junior Morgan McCarthy, and Sophomore Katie Hayden. They proved strong as a unit, only allowing one corner kick, holding Cal Lutheran in their half of the field for a majority of the game. Senior Keeper Katie Loomis made one save and obtained her 9th shutout in 10 games.
This win moves UCSC to 11-2-2 (8-2-1 in Division III). The UCSC Women’s Soccer team will play their final home game of the regular season this Saturday, November 3rd, versus Division III rival California State East Bay at 1 p.m on the Lower East Remote Field. This will be a special match as the team will honor their four seniors, Megan Cox, Katie Loomis, Danielle Mullen, and Didi Ramirez, for all of their tremendous contributions to this program. October 19, 2007 Lady Slugs Conquer the Panthers with a 2-0 Victory
ORANGE, CA -- The UC Women’s Soccer team move to 9-2-2 and take another big step forward towards a chance for a NCAA playoff birth with a very important 2-0 win. The victory over Chapman University improves the Banana Slugs unbeaten streak to eight straight games (7-0-1).
The atmosphere was set - a Friday Night game at Wilson Field under the lights with Division III Independent Rival Chapman University (7-7-2). The Lady Slugs were fired up and came out strong in the first ten minutes. The offensive line consisting of forwards, Senior Danielle Mullen, Junior Annick Lamb, and Junior Alec Drew, and offensive midfielders Senior Didi Ramirez and Sophomore Jacki Belton, were a dynamic group. They controlled the pace of the game, keeping the play on Chapman’s half of the field, with good passing combinations and off the ball runs, creating many dangerous opportunities in the front of Chapman’s goal.
The Lady Slugs outshot the Panthers 20-4 and obtained 7 corner kicks to Chapman’s 2. It was the UCSC who snapped a scoreless tie at 64:05 on a goal from Sophomore Kira Ticus, giving the Slugs a 1-0 lead. Junior Morgan McCarthy sent in a lofting corner kick, which Ticus fired low past Chapman GK Junior Madison Coffin. Less than nine minutes later, Freshman Jacki Blaugrund scored an insurance goal for Santa Cruz with a shot into the upper right corner chipping the keeper from 35 yards out.
Senior Katie Loomis made one save on the day. Loomis and her defensive line have only allowed one goal and obtained seven shutouts in the past eight games. The Lady Slugs will be back in action this Sunday, October 21st in their second game of two on this Los Angeles trip as they take on Whittier College at 1 pm.

October 14, 2007 Lady Slugs Women's Soccer Stay Undefeated at Home
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The slugs continue their winning streak at home, leaving no doubt as to the outcome of Sunday’s game against Dominican University. The slugs now 8-2-2 overall, defeated the Penguins 6-0, scoring five of the six goals in the first half.
Less than a minute into the game junior forward Annick Lamb finished a break away goal off a lead pass from senior Danielle Mullen to start the slugs off on the right foot. With one goal put away, the slugs dictated the run of time with a beautiful possession game. Thirty-three minutes into the first half the Slugs were awarded a direct kick, which senior captain Didi Ramirez slid past the wall and the keeper into the side netting for the second goal of the game.
Only six minutes later, junior defender Morgan McCarthy, made a run up the left side of the field with the ball at her feet serving the ball into the box. Freshman Erica Wheeler-Dubin sprinted in front of the keeper to redirect the ball into the net recording her first goal of the season. In the 42nd minute, freshman forward Sara DaMert, did a great job to earn a goal of her own, battling the Dominican goalkeeper over a loose ball inside the box. To put an exclamation point on the first half, Erica Wheeler-Dubin made a great defensive play winning the ball from a Dominican defender in the 43rd minute and shooting it from 18 yards to put the slugs first half score at 5-0.
Not to be shut out in the second half, Slug sophomore Katie Von Beroldingen finished a corner kick from freshman Jacki Blaugrund in the 83rd minute, tallying the final goal of the game. The slugs finished with 25 shots to the Penguin’s 3.
Dominican University battled all through the second half, but despite their efforts they were unable to penetrate the slugs defense lead by senior captain Megan Cox. The Slugs gave up only one corner kick in 90 minutes and senior captain goalkeeper Katie Loomis recorded a first half shut out. Freshman goalkeepers Janneke Lang and Elle Vermillion split time in the second half keeping the shutout alive for the slugs, recording a total of three saves between the two of them.
After a successful weekend with victories against CSU East Bay and Dominican University, the Slugs gear up for a two game road trip down to Southern California where they will battle Division III Independent rivals Chapman University (6-6-2 overall) Friday night October 19th at 7pm, and Whittier College on Sunday at 1pm. With only four games left in the regular season, the Slugs are determined to secure a bid to the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
October 7, 2007 Women's Soccer Overpower Menlo College, 4-0
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Women’s Soccer team kept their unbeaten record at home alive with a solid performance and well-deserved 4-0 win over NAIA opponent Menlo College. The Lady Slugs stepped onto the pitch with authority on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for the first match of the double header with the men’s program, scoring in the first three minutes of play.
UCSC was able to string a sequence of passing through the midfield and onto Junior Forward Annick Lamb's feet. Annick was able to find Junior Defender Morgan McCarthy overlapping into the left corner. Morgan collected the ball and drove to the endline. She cut back and slide the ball into Senior Forward Danielle Mullen, who was crashing the box through the middle. This is the second game in a row that Danielle has put a stamp on the game in the first five minutes.
The Lady Slugs were able to draw on the strengths of a majority of the their talented squad throughout the second half. UCSC have had 42 corner kicks this season compared to their opponents 23. Holly Sinclair was able to help the Lady Slugs execute on one today as she connected in the air at the top of the six yard box off of Senior Didi Ramirez’s corner kick, driving a demanding header past the Menlo keeper in the second minute of the second half. Holly Sinclair has had a standout year thus far, stepping into a stating roll as centerback early in the season. She has been instrumental in leading the team with her inspirational performance on the field and a key contributor on defense in the team’s six shutouts.
Two sophomores were able to connect in the 57th minute when Midfielder Katie VonBeroldingen slipped a ball through a seam in the back line of the Menlo defense. Forward Kira Ticus made a great run and finished low and away on a breakaway with the keeper. Annick Lamb capped the scoring on the day when she turned quickly on her defender from a well-played ball by Freshman Midfielder Sofia Juarez. Annick touched the ball by another defender and sliced the it into the left side netting for her sixth goal of the season.
Freshman Janneke Lang entered the match in at the 66th minute for Senior Keeper Katie Loomis (pictured above). Loomis had one save on the day, earning her six shutout of the season. This win moves the Lady Slugs to 6-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Division III play.
UCSC will have the week to prepare for back to back games this weekend as they will face Division III rival California State University East Bay in Hayward at 1 pm on Saturday, October 13th and then Division II Dominican University at home on the Lower East Remote Field on Sunday, October 14th at 1 pm. October 3, 2007 Women's Soccer End In A Tie Against Division II Monterey Bay
MONTEREY, CA – The UCSC Women’s Soccer move to 5-2-2 on the season as they come away with a 1-1 tie versus Division II opponent CSU Monterey Bay. It was the Lady Slugs who struck first, putting one away early in the 7th minute of play. After a good build up through the midfield, the ball was switched to right outside back Sophomore Katie Hayden. She had a great first touch and played Junior Alec Drew down the line. Drew used her speed and technically ability to get in past two defenders slicing a cross into the box. Senior Danielle Mullen made a back door run and finished first time with a brilliant volley.
The Slugs continued to dominate the first half, out shooting the Otters 6 to 1 and controlling much of the possession. Junior Annick Lamb looked to strike next when she was able to beat the keeper at the top of the 18-yard box. She fired her shot through a crowd and it was barely cleared of the goal line by a CSUMB defender. With two minutes to go before half time, a ball slipped behind the CSUMB defense and Melanie Matthews ran onto it, got a touch and pushed it past the keeper. However, the goal was called off when the referee stated that Matthews had fouled the keeper with her run after the play.
UCSC entered the second half with the wind at their backs. The Slugs were able to generate five corner kicks but just couldn’t seem to execute. However, it CSUMB, who came out high-pressuring everywhere, that were able to tie the game up in the 50th minute. They scored in the same fashion, finding Amber Spencer wide left who drove the ball to the end line where she was able to get a cross off. Spencer connected with Sarah Anderson on the top of the six-yard box far post who sliced it past UCSC Senior Keeper Katie Loomis. Loomis had 4 saves on the day.
The Lady Slugs continued to battle on through two ten minute overtime periods, generating two more corner kicks, but the match ended in a 1-1 tie. The UCSC Women’s soccer team will take to the field this Sunday October 7th as they will pair up with the Men’s team for a double header versus

September 28, 2007 Women's Soccer Earn a 2-0 Victory over Holy Names University
Oakland, CA - - The UC Santa Cruz Women’s Soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over NAIA opponent Holy Names University, improving to 5-2-1 on the season. This result gives the Slugs their third win in a row, all of which have been shutouts.
UCSC began with a rocky start, giving up three corners in the first ten minutes, but they were able to re-group shortly after. It was UCSC Senior Danielle Mullen who kicked off the scoring in the 20th minute when she struck an excellent corner kick, which went into the goal after a deflection by a Holy Names defender’s shin. It was the Lady Slugs who controlled much of the play and led the match in shots. With fifteen minutes remaining in the 2nd half, UCSC sealed the game when Sophomore Wendy Funk had a great first touch into the box where she was taken down from behind before she could get a shot off. Senior Didi Ramirez, who has played extremely well in the midfield, stepped up to penalty kick and smashed it into the left corner off the post and into the back of the net.
The Lady Slugs look to continue their success as they travel to Division II CSU Monterey Bay on Wednesday, October 3rd. September 24, 2007 Annick Lamb Receives Independent Player Of The Week For Women's Soccer

September 22, 2007 Lady Slugs Women's Soccer Top Chapman in Overtime, 1-0
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- As the rain clouds cleared, West Region Division III Rivals UCSC and Chapman took to the pitch to battle it out. The Lady Slugs slowly took over, controlling possession of the ball and outshooting Chapman 17-4. The Slugs team defense came up big once again, not giving up one corner kick thoughout the entire match.
However, regulation ended in a 0-0 tie, sending the game into golden goal overtime. In the 7th minute of the first overtime period, outside back Katie Hayden sent in a lofting cross from the right side of the field onto the top of the six yard box. Junior Annick Lamb was able to connect, out jumping a Chapman defender and heading it over Chapman Keeper Brittni Marciano to score the game winning goal.
UCSC Senior Keeper Katie Loomis earned her fourth shutout of the year. The Lady Slugs move to 4-2-1 on the season and will take the week to prepare for their next match in Oakland versus Holy Names on Saturday, September 29th at 1pm.
September 15, 2007 Lady Slugs Sail to 2-0 Victory over Westmont College
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Women’s Soccer program improves to 3-2-1 after taking on NAIA opponent Westmont College on very windy afternoon. Outshooting their opponent 12-1, it was the Lady Slugs who sailed to a 2-0 victory, recording their third shutout on the season.
The Lady Slugs team defense looked strong, holding Westmont to only one shot. Westmont Heather Brown's shot was well stuck but Senior Keeper Katie Loomis came up with a big save, tipping the ball over the top of the crossbar.
After ending the half in a 0-0 tie, UC Santa Cruz came out determined to take control in their first home match of the season. The Lady Slugs started to knock the ball around, connecting passes and were able to create 8 of their 12 shots on the day. After earning an indirect kick 35 yards out on right side of the field, Senior Didi Ramirez lofted a beautiful ball into the box. There was a deflection by UCSC Erica Dubin and Westmont Keeper Ashley Werner, however it was Centerback Sophomore Holly Sinclair who smashed it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 60th minute.
In the 82nd, Junior Annick Lamb showed why she is UCSC’s leading scorer and record holder. Lamb received the ball at midfield and quickly turned on two Westmont defenders. She proceeded to drive down the left flank taking on two more defenders where she found herself one on one with the keeper. Lamb capitalized on her opportunity with a brilliant finish and sealed the 2-0 victory over Westmont College.

September 4, 2007 UCSC Lady Slugs Edge Out Willamette 1-0
TACOMA, WA -- Junior Annick Lamb dribbled though a group of players and scored at 86:31, sending the Banana Slugs to a 1-0 victory over Willamette University in a women's soccer game hosted by the University of Puget Sound on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. UC-Santa Cruz, playing its third game in five days, improved to 2-1.
The teams played to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes at Willamette last season, and a similar result seemed likely until Lamb's goal broke another scoreless deadlock. UC-Santa Cruz finished the game with a 20-8 edge in total shots, but held a much slimmer 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Banana Slugs achieved a 7-4 margin in corner kicks.
UCSC Keeper Senior Katie Loomis recorded four saves to earn the shutout. For Willamette, Lo Holahan registered three saves during the scoreless first half, while Kelli Gano allowed the goal and earned two saves over the final 45 minutes.
The Lady Slugs will return to Santa Cruz for two days before heading down to Los Angeles for match-ups with the University of Redlands on Friday, Sept. 7th and Claremont College on Sunday, Sept. 9th.
September 2, 2007 Lady Slugs Overpowered by UPS in a 4-0 loss
TACOMA, WA -- In a battle of nationally-ranked squads, it was the 21st-ranked Puget Sound Loggers who overpowered the 7th-ranked UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, 4-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game on Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field in Tacoma, Washington.
The Loggers picked up an early goal when Midfielder Fiona Gornick took a pass from Kandace Logan in the 5th minute and blasted a shot from outside the box past UCSC Senior Keeper Katie Loomis. Puget Sound doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Janece Levien scored on a pass from Adrienne Folsom that was redirected by the foot of UPS Katie Gillette. In the second half, the Loggers made it 3-0 in the 48th minute when Lauren Gehring took advantage of a corner kick, heading in the ball lofted up by Logan. The Loggers earned their final score of the afternoon in the 59th minute when Gornick took advantage of a deflection off the right post and put the ball into the net for the second time.
The Lady Slugs were able to put together 10 shots but just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. UCSC Senior Katie Loomis made five saves for the Banana Slugs, but allowed the four goals as the Loggers took the 4-0 win. UCSC moves to 1-1-0 and will stay in Tacoma for a few more days as they will take on Willamette in a neutral-site game on Tuesday at Peyton Field.
August 31, 2007 Women's Soccer Defeats Pacific Lutheran In Season Opener
PARKLAND, Wash. – UC Santa Cruz, ranked No. 8 in the Division III women’s soccer Top 25 poll, scored a goal in each half to defeat host Pacific Lutheran, 2-0, in the 2007 season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs got on the board at 36:19 when Annick Lamb hit a sliding left-footed shot from an angle past PLU goalkeeper Amanda Tschauner. Lamb raced onto a nice through ball from Danielle Mullin and fended off one defender before finishing the play.
The Banana Slugs had the run of play through the first 45 minutes, out-shooting the hosts, 9-2, and they continued their assault during the second half when they took 12 shots to two for the Lutes. The visitors nearly scored their second goal with about 16 minutes remaining but Wendy Funk’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced away. It didn’t matter, because less than a minute later Didi Ramirez latched onto the ball following a goal mouth scramble and fired a 15-yard bullet into the left side of the net.
Tschauner, who finished with six saves, came up with several stops in the closing minutes, including a diving effort on a shot by Lamb.
Pacific Lutheran’s best chance came with about four minutes remaining when Christina McDuffie’s left-footed shot was parried over the bar by UCSC goalkeeper Katie Loomis.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday as PLU plays at Evergreen State and UCSC plays at Puget Sound.
