The #13 Unlucky? Not for the UCSC Women's Soccer Team

The UCSC Women’s Soccer team took the match in to their own hands early surging onto the field with great energy. It was a complete team effort as the Lady Slugs played their best soccer yet! They were able to build from the back, stringing together superb
combinations throughout the field, and converting 21 shots into a 7 - 0 victory over Division III opponent University of Dallas.

Some say the number thirteen is an unlucky. Not Sophomore #13 Annick Lamb who scored her 13th goal of the season today on Friday the 13th. Danielle Mullen beat two defenders deep in the corner. She drove to the byline and connected with Lamb on the top of the six yard box, who finished the ball near post in the 17th minute.

UCSC left back Katie Hayden was able to take the space created on the weak side after the ball was moved quickly around the back line. She whipped the ball across the field finding Wendy Funk in the 21st minute and Miranda Emanuel in the 66th minute, both streaking in on the back post for brilliant finishes. Katie Von Beroldingen battled through traffic in the box serving a ball in the air where Kira Ticus scored with a header in the 56th minute. UCSC scored their fifth goal of the match when Freshman Wendy Funk struck
again, pounding the ball past University of Dallas keeper in the 68th minute.

Late in the second half, Annick Lamb scored a magnificent goal, placing her shot in the far post upper V in the 75th minute. She went on to complete her first hat trick of the season in the 87th minute. After an extraoridnary first touch, Alec Drew was able to turn on her defender in the middle of the field. She craftily slipped a ball through the seam to Annick, who scored the final goal of game.

The Lady Slugs are playing with a 100% team defense mentality. Out of the 14 games this season, UCSC have now recorded 12 shutouts and only allowed 2 goals
scored against. These outstanding efforts have been anchored by a stellar back line consisting of Megan Cox, Shelby Stillians, Callie Hajosy, and Katie Hayden. Junior keeper Katie Loomis had 2 saves in the match. University of Dallas keeper Jennifer Kunhardt recorded 6 saves.

This instrumental win moves the Lady Slugs forward in the hunt for a playoff spot as their record improves to 11-0-3 (9-0-2) on the season. Their next match up will be against local opponent Menlo College on Monday at 2pm on the East Remote Field of the UC Santa Cruz campus.
