Slugs Demand Respect

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Today marked the second time this year that the Slugs have upset a nationally ranked team. Facing off against Chapman University this afternoon, the Tigers were ranked No.16 in the Nation and No. 3 in the West Region.

Chapman's Simi Phull scored the first goal 20 minutes into the game off a corner kick. But Claire Gustafson would answer back for UCSC in the 33rd minute as she drilled one from outside the box into the back of the net. It would be a tied score as the teams went into halftime.

The second half was a battle, these two teams went at each other back and forth, scoring a total of 5 goals. UCSC would start it off in the 67th minute when Skye Vendt-Pearce went on a breakaway beating her defender and putting it past the diving Chapman goalkeeper. Chapman would respond 6 minutes later off another corner kick.

With the score tied 2-2 the Slugs would score 2 straight goals in the 84th minute. The first coming off a corner kick where Junior Kirstin Horn was able to head it in, and then 50 seconds later Caitlin Carpenter had a breakaway that she was able to convert into a netter.

Credit Chapman with never giving up, with 4 minutes to go Liz Hopkins was able to score off of yet another Chapman corner kick, bringing the score back to 4-3.

But it was all about the Slugs as they held on for the remaining 4 minutes as UCSC went on to seal their sixth straight victory.

UCSC looks to continue their winning streak as they travel to face Menlo College Monday at 4pm.

DIII Independents Player of the Week
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Skye Vendt-Pearce of UC-Santa Cruz is the Association of Division III Independents Women's Soccer Player of the Week after contributing to all three goals the Slugs scored in a 3-0 victory over CSU Hayward.

In the only game of the week for UCSC (7-2-1), ranked #8 in the West Region, she gave the Slugs a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the contest with regionally No. 9 ranked Hayward, by stealing a pass and converting it into a netter. Vendt-Pearce, who played 48 minutes in the game, added an insurance goal in the 61st minute, beating two defenders before drilling a shot over the opposing keeper. She also assisted on the game's third goal, totaling 11 points this season on five goals and one assist.

Senior Captains lead Slugs to Victory

Skye Vendt-Pearce

KICKING IN A 5TH STRAIGHT VICTORY: #15 Skye Vendt-Pearce.
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Today's game proved to be another physical game between the soccer programs of UCSC and CSU Hayward, as Hayward was battling for a win that would move them ahead of Santa Cruz in the rankings.  Having been swept by Hayward last year, the Slugs were just as determined to win on their home field.  And it was the play of Senior captains Skye Vendt-Pearce and Gina Ramirez secured the 5th straight victory for UCSC.

The Slugs jumped out to a quick lead, only 6 minutes into the game Hayward's goalkeeper misplayed a pass back to her which ended up right to the feet of a charging Skye Vendt-Pearce. With little time to react, Vendt-Pearce was able to kick the ball between the keepers legs and got the fans on their feet as the ball rolled past the goal line.

Vendt-Pearce's offensive prowess was far from over as she scored again in the 61st minute, beating 2 defenders in the box and putting it beyond the goalie's reach.  Four minutes later, Vendt-Pearce assisted teammate and co-captain Gina for her 3rd goal on the season and 3rd and final goal of the game.  After a stagnant first half, Hayward did turn on the offensive pressure in the second half, but the Slugs back line held strong and goalkeeper Katie Loomis racked up 5 saves.

With a week and a half off, the Slugs have to remain focused for their next game against DIII Independent and No. 12 ranked team in the country, Chapman University.  The Slugs will face Chapman at home on Friday October 8th at 2pm.

No Mercy for the Dominican Penguins

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Yesterday marked the first day of classes here at UC Santa Cruz, and the UCSC Women’s soccer team (6-2-1) showed what it means to be a DIII student-athlete. With the beginning of the school year comes a lot of chaos, but the Slug women were able to step out on that field with nothing but focus. Lead by the experience and determination of the upperclassmen, it was Junior Lauren Philibosian that got the Slugs off to a quick start. She scored 2 unassisted goals, the first coming in the 14th minute her second goal came a mere two minutes later. From that point on, the Dominican Penguins were on their heels as the Slugs took 18 total shots on goal.

In the second half, it was Senior Captain Gina Ramirez that started things off for the Slugs, after a Dominican defender deflected the ball Ramirez was in the box to put one in the near side past the Penguins goalie. The next goal in the 76th minute showed how well this team has been clicking together as the Slugs used perfect ball movement to bring it up the right side of the field setting up Sophomore Claire Gustafson for her 3rd assist this season. Gustafson sent a perfect cross from the corner over to Caitlin Carpenter, who headed it into the back of the net for her 5th goal this year.

The Dominican defense simply had no answers for the Slug offense.

Claire Gustafson was able to get another assist only a minute and a half later when she set up Senior Captain Skye Vendt-Pearce from about 20 yards out as Vendt-Pearce drilled one past the Dominican back line into the upper left corner of the goal. It was an amazing shot that put an exclamation point on the 5-0 victory and the Slugs 4th straight win, sixth on the season.

If you missed the action yesterday be sure to come out and support your Slugs from the sideline as the UCSC women’s soccer team takes on CSU Hayward (2-2-3) Wednesday at 3pm.

Caitlin Carpenter Unstoppable in Oregon

DIII INDEPENDENTS -- Caitlin Carpenter provided all of the offense for UC Santa Cruz in two out-of-state road victories, including an upset of a Top 10 ranked opponent, and has been named the Association of Division III Independents women’s soccer Player of the Week, as the Slugs (5-2-1) sweep the weekly soccer awards.

Carpenter notched three goals in three games for UCSC. In a 1-0 upset of No. 10 ranked Willamette University in Salem, Oregon on September 17, she tallied the game’s only goal 23 minutes into the contest, as UCSC prevailed 1-0. The upset ended Willamette’s 74-game home unbeaten streak that had lasted more than seven seasons. Two days later, she scored two unassisted goals for the Slugs in a 2-1 double-overtime triumph against Linfield College in McMinnville, OR. She originally gave UCSC a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute, before notching the game-winner in the 100th minute.

Slugs Invade Oregon

SALEM, OR -- The Slug Women's Soccer team has traveled over 2,500 miles in the past week playing a total of 5 games in 8 days.  Most of those miles came from this past weekend when the Slugs went up to Oregon to play against Willamette and Linfield.  And if there was to be an upset victory in the Slugs' schedule this year, Willamette was the one.  Home of former Athletic Director Mark Majeski, Willamette's numbers going into the game were intimidating; they were the #10 ranked team in the country - the highest ranking team on this year's schedule.

On Friday afternoon, the Slugs arrived at a field with unfamiliar weather conditions and a home-field advantage that helped the Bearcats win 74 straight games. (That's over 7 seasons of undefeated soccer on that field!)  And it took our Slugs only 23 minutes to break that streak as Claire Gustafson set up Caitlin Carpenter for the game's only goal.  The Slug defense, anchored by Paige Alumbaugh, Ivy Whitford, Megan Cox, and Rachel Maxwell-Jolly kept it tight for the remaining 67 minutes of play while the Bearcats went on to outshoot the Slugs 12-9.  Freshman keeper Katie Loomis' 4 saves on the game helped seal the deal as the Slugs went on to upset the Bearcats 1-0, this was the 4th shutout for Loomis.

The Slugs went on the play Linfield College on Sunday afternoon where Carpenter was unstoppable, scoring the only 2 UCSC goals -- the first coming in the 31st minute and the second coming in double overtime, where Carpenter broke a 1-1 tie to give the Slugs their 3rd straight victory.  The Slug defense held strong once again and Katie Loomis had another 4 saves, bringing her to 36 on the season.

A great road trip for the Slugs, it was a complete team effort as the Slugs came together and believed in each other for two big wins on the season.  With a record of 5-2-1, the Slugs have now moved up into the NSCAA rankings as they hold the #8 spot in the West Region.

Slugs to Face #10 in Nation

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- After an upset by Lewis & Clark College (2-0-1) on Sunday, the Slugs left for their second of three L.A. trips to face Cal Lutheran. Taking just 9 shots in the game, Lauren Philibosian was able to setup Michelle Sharman for the games only goal at the 33-minute mark. This was the second loss for Cal Lu (0-2-0) as the Lancers were unable to finish on their 17 shots on goal, UCSC goalkeeper Katie Loomis was credited with saving 6 of those 17 shots. UCSC's record now moves up to 3-2-1.

Today the Slugs packed up their gear for a long road trip up to Oregon, first stopping in Salem where the Slugs will face Willamette (#10 in Nation, #2 in West Region), one of the toughest teams on this year's schedule. The Slugs will then have a day of rest and drive up to Portland where they will compete against Linfield College (0-2-1). With 2 wins already coming from road games, the Slugs look to build on their momentum from Monday's win with them to Oregon.

UCSC's next home game is Thursday September 23rd at 2pm where they will be defending their home field against Dominican College -- Come out and support your Lady Slugs!!

UCSC Women's Soccer loses in Regionals; Chapman, Puget Sound advance

UCSC -- The UCSC Women's Soccer team saw its season end on Saturday, as the host team for the NCAA Western Regionals.

The host Banana Slugs saw their season end Saturday despite playing a gritty match against visiting Chapman, losing on penalty kicks, 4-3 with the score tied at 1-1.

Chapman's Alyce Perry started the scoring in the first half, and UCSC Junior Midfielder Karen Nycz was able to answer in the second to send the game into overtime. Two 10-minute overtime periods were unable to determine a winner, and so the game went to penalty kicks.

After going up 1-0 in the first frame, UCSC missed back-to-back kicks and Chapman capitalized to end UCSC's run.

Earlier in the day, Puget Sound would soundly defeat Claremont Mudd-Scripps, 4-0.

The Logger's Courtney Kar came off the bench to score two goals and Elizabeth Pitman and Victoria Trotta each added a goal.

Puget Sound will meet Chapman on Sunday for the right to advance to the quarterfinals. Game time is set at 1:00 pm at the Lower East Field.

Despite UCSC's loss, this season has included some tremendous achievements for the UCSC Women's Soccer team. The team made the postseason for the third time in four years, and this was the first time ever UCSC has hosted an NCAA Soccer Regional Championship. On October 10, a school record was set as the team blew out Menlo College, 20-0. It was both the most goals scored in team history and the largest margin of victory. The team developed many excellent young players, including Freshman Forward Caitlin Carpenter, who started every match of the season, and Freshman Kara Deyhle, who by the end of the season had been named the team's starting goalkeeper.

Though it will lose several key players to graduation, the future of the program has only become stronger.

SANTA CRUZ -- By the time UCSC Head Women's Soccer Coach Paul Lester "called off the dogs" in 63rd minute, UCSC had already set a staggering record - and the scoreboard at UCSC would have been easily mistaken as that from an American Football game.

18 minutes into the second half, Lester halted the offensive onslaught, and UCSC would focus on defense for the rest of the day.

Top performers included Freshman Forward Marissa Robitaille, who lead UCSC with 4 goals. Senior Forwards Bridget Baroncini and Danielle Schlosser each had 3 goals and 2 assists, and Freshman Forward Kirstin Horn also had 3 goals.
