Weston's Performance Leads Slugs at National Championships
Sophomore Ben Weston carried the UC Santa Cruz Men's
Swimming and Diving team to a 19th place finish (out of 54 teams) at the
NCAA Division III National Championships in Buffalo, New York this past
weekend. Weston, the lone representative from UCSC, finished 2nd in the
200 yard freestyle race, 3rd in the 500 yard freestyle and 4th in the
1650 yard freestyle. The National Championships caps off an outstanding
year for Weston as he had team-best times in 10 categories and finished
2nd in three others.

Maglasang finishes seventh at National Championships
UC Santa Cruz's Andrea Maglasang
finished seventh in the 100-meter butterfly in 58.08 seconds at the NCAA
Division III Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships on Friday.
Maglasang, a three-time All-American, was one of five Slugs participating
in the Championships. Joining her at the Nationals in Buffalo, New York
were Rhonda Feldman, Allison Sawyer, Stephane Miller and Kara Holzworth.
As a team, the Banana Slugs finished
15th in the country. UCSC was one of only two Division III schools participating
in the competition.
We have finished the dual meet
season with our dual meets against UC Davis. As expected on the men's
side we lost to what is probably the best Davis Men's team ever. Davis
Men graduate eight seniors this year, so next year we hope to make it
a better meet. On the women's side we won 6 of the 12 individual events,
but depth played an important role in the lose. The last two years we
lost the dual meet to UC Davis women, and came back to beat them at the
conference Championships. It will be tougher this year. We could give
up over 100 points in diving. We will do our best to over come the diving
points.
A week earlier at San Francisco
State the Slugs won both dual meets. The men had to overcome having the
A and B medley relays being disqualified, and finished 2 points ahead
of the Gator men. The Slug Women easily won, winning 10 of the 12 individual
events.
We finished the dual meet season with 10 women's A and B qualifying times
for NCAA's, and another 4 qualifying times for the men. This is the most
for the Slugs, before conference, since I have been here. We have not
shaved for any meets so far, and we place a lot of emphasis on our Conference
meet. It should be exciting and we hope to qualify several more swimmers
for NCAA's next week. Our conference meet is at the Long Beach Belmont
Plaza Pool and will take place February 15-17th. Any swimmers that are
in the area are invited to visit the meet and say hello.
The conference includes CSU Bakersfield,
CSU Hayward, Cal Baptist, Central Washington, Chapman, Hawaii-Men, Loyola
, Pepperdine, San Francisco State, Seattle University, UC Davis, UC San
Diego, Denver University-Men, and University of San Diego. If I may say
so, this is a pretty good conference. The women's trials start each morning
at 9:00am, with the men's trials following approximately at 12:30pm. Finals
start at 6:00pm.
Already this year the Slugs All-time
Top Ten List has taken a beating. After Conference and NCAA's the newsletter
will include the updated All-time list. I hope that some of you will look
at the list and envision your name being there it the next couple years.
We are not that far away from
“acceptance' and “denial ' notices going out. If you are denied and
truly hope to attend UCSC call me asap. We have had some success in the
appeal process. If you follow the formula that was used for UC eligibility,
and you are eligible then you should be accepted. This is a good year
for getting in since UCSC is adding about 1000 new freshman. Finally,
for those of you that send updates keep it up. It is fun seeing how you
improve.

Dear Prospective Slug,
I would like to thank those swimmers
that filled out questionnaires on the Website (questionnaires that got
lost in cyberspace for several months), for taking the time to send in
new questionnaires. I hope you enjoy the newsletters.
We have been home from conference
for a couple days and are just now catching up. Conference was very exciting
and we had many, many great swims Check the best times list and you will
be able to see the number of swimmers with A and/or B cuts for NCAA's.
You will notice that the 2001 top ten list has taken a beating. We also
broke several school records, they include,
Ben Weston 200 free - 1:39.64
Kara Holsworth 200 free - 1:53.53
Andrea Maglasang 200 I.M. - 2:10.49.
Both Ben and Andrea were unshaved since they already had A cuts for NCAA's.
The All-Time Top Ten list will
be included in the next newsletter following NCAA's when all the times
are in for the year. As of this writing there have been 56 times that
will make the All-time list. That is a lot for one year.
Kara Holzworth was this years
only event winner. Kara won the 200 free, in come from behind fashion
taking the lead at the 150 mark. It is always fun when a Division III
swimmer wins against 12 DI and DII scholarship schools. Check our conference
result sheet for additional finalist.
The women this year finished
6th, and the men slipped to 9th. The men, although they were ninth, were
only 34 points from a 6th place finish. UC San Diego was sixth at 226,
Seattle U. was seventh at 214, Central Washington was eighth at 210, and
the Slugs were ninth at 192. Our goal for next year is to get our diving
on track. For example, on the women's side we gave up well over 100
points to UC Davis in diving. We can continue to have great meets on the
swim side, but we will always have trouble if we have two events where
we are out scored by 100 plus points.
I am very proud of the team and
how they swam. It is a young team this year and I am very pleased with
how the newcomers came through. NCAA's is coming up and we have set
our goals to finish in the top 15 in both the Men's and Women's team
races. I believe we have a very good chance to make this happen.
During the first part of March
the acceptance notices will be going out. If you are UC eligible you should
receive an acceptance notice. If you are not accepted make sure that you
call me immediately. Those of you that send updates, thanks. They are
fun to get.

Dear Prospective Slug,
I would like to thank you for
your interest in one of the finest Universities in the world. UCSC is
not only a great school, but is one of the most, if not the most, beautiful
school anywhere. One to two miles away are beaches that are included in
the list of top ten beaches in the United States. If you surf, this is
the school you're looking for. On top of all that UCSC has a great swim
program. If you are willing to work hard, (9-11 swim sessions per week/
3 weight training sessions per week/ 3-4 dryland sessions per week) you
will have the opportunity to swim your fastest.
Last year UC Santa Cruz had approximately
three hundred inquires about the swim team. This year, compared to last
year, we are receiving inquires at about twice last years rate. I feel
that there are several reasons for this. One is that UCSC has been discovered
as a great place to go to school. Our number of applications the last
couple years proves this. Two, we have had two very good years with the
swim teams. UCSC is a place that a swimmer has the opportunity to train
very hard and swim very fast in a competitive Conference and Division.
If the rate of inquires holds for the year there will be no way we can
keep in contact with 500-600 seniors. Therefore I am asking all swimmers
with interest about the program to help us streamline the process. Please
fill out the recruit form included in this letter. If you send back the
recruit form we are assuming that you have serious interest in UCSC and
being a member of the swim team. At this point in the year that would
mean UCSC is one of your top five schools of interest. Those that do so
will be added to our database of recruits.

Some recent highlights from this
summer include Sophomore Sensation Ben Weston winning the 200-meter freestyle
at Junior Nationals. Ben, from the consolation final, also broke the Jr.
National record in the 400 meter free and qualified in both events for
the US Olympic Trials held one week later at Indianapolis. Since this
was the last Junior National meet, Ben's 400 free record will last a very
long time.

~For Recruits~
Dear Prospective Slug,
Thank you for your interest in
the University of California, Santa Cruz. We have been told by admissions
that this coming year it will be more difficult that ever to get in to
school at UCSC. The Admissions Office has told us that at least a 3.0
with high SAT scores will be needed to be considered for admission. Last
year, on average, for incoming freshman admissions required a 3.4 -3.5
and 1100+ SAT's. Of course this varies from year to year and we never
understand the entire admissions process, but last year we had several
swimmer applicants denied admission that fell below these averages (we
also had several applicants accepted that fell below, go figure). I have
included for your use a freshman information guide. Please take a look
at the requirements before you apply. I would hate to see you apply if
you have little chance of gaining admission. Also, if you do not have
the required classes needed, then you will be automatically denied regardless
of you SAT scores and GPA. For those athletics that meet the minimum requirements,
and feel you may only have a slight chance for admissions (might be on
the bubble), then I encourage you to apply. If you are denied we have
had good success on the appeal process.
For transfer students it is much
easier. If a transfer student has the required classes, maintains above
a 2.4 GPA in transferable classes, and takes a minimum number of units,
then transfer students will be accepted.

Prospective Slugs,
The last two weekends have been
very busy. We traveled to Cal Baptist for an Invitational 10/27-10/28
and hosted UC Davis and Cal State Bakersfield for a relay meet 11/4. We
added another B-cut for NCAA's. Ben Weston went 1:43.49 in the 200 free
lead off for the 800 Free Relay. According to the NCAA DIII rankings,
as of this writing, the Slugs fill three number one rankings. Ben Weston
is first in the 200 free, 500 free, and Stephanie Miller in the 1650 free.
Of course it is very early to look at rankings but when you're number
one we what people to know. The latest top ten list is included in this
newsletter and you can see the improvements during the two meets.
At the Cal Baptist Invitational
the Slug women placed third behind Peppedine and CBU. Both of the teams
have considerable amounts of scholarship money, yet the Slugs were able
to win several events, and make it close.
Stephanie Miller won the 500
free at 5:14.29 setting a meet record. Ben Weston set two meet records
in the 500 free, 4:40.47, and the 50 free, 22.13. Slug men also set a
meet record in the 500 free Progressive at 4:18.55, and Slug men won the
400 free relay at 3:19.44. Men's scores CBU 328 / UCSC 258 / Redlands
116 / LaVerne 43.5 / Biola 36
Against UC Davis the Slug women
won 5 of 10 events and narrowly lost to UC Davis 223-209. Several of the
women's relays are approaching the NCAA cuts.
The Slug men were dominated by
UC Davis and CSU Bakersfield men. Bakersfield and Davis finished 1st and
4th in last years Division II Championships. Davis 238 /Bakersfiled 138
/ UCSC 77. Although the men were unable to win any events they did finished
second in two events. Depth was the main factor in the relays for the
men.
Coming up, the Slug women travel
to San Jose State November 11th. Then the following weekend both men and
women will compete at Claremont in a double dual with UC San Diego. I
want to invite all recruits in Southern California, on December 1-2-3,
to come by the Speedo Cup held at Long Beach Plaza.
Last , but very important, is
the application due date. UC applications are due by the end of November.
At UC Santa Cruz, except for very unusual situation, we don't have anyway
to get applications in after that date. Any questions e-mail me or call.

Dear Prospective Slugs,
The 2000-2001 Slugs have opened
their season. You can check out the season top ten list that is included
in this newsletter. So far to date we have two NCAA Consideration Cuts.
Ben Weston has swum a 4:39.40 in the 500 free, and Freshman Stephanie
Miller has gone 18:04.62 in the 1650. Stephanie's time is 2 seconds under
the consideration cut and moves her to number four on the all time top
ten list for the mile. Stephanie just missed the 400 I.M. cut at 4:45.56.
Kara Holsworth has moved into the ninth spot on the 100 free all time
list with a 55.43, and split a 24.89 on the medley relay. In the breaststroke
Kim Onken takes over the number four spot in the 100 breast at 1:10.51(
1:09.45 on a relay) and number six in the 200 breast 2:35.64. These are
all pretty impressive early season times. The Slug women finished second,
non-division I, at the UOP Invitational with 960 points. The women won
4 out of the 5 relays with UC Davis touching out the Slug women in the
800 Free Relay. The Men also finished second with 779 points to UC Davis
Men.
This last weekend ( 10/20-10/21)
was Preview Weekend at UCSC. We had twelve recruits on campus for one
to two days. This is by far the most impressive group of recruits we have
had for a recruiting weekend. The weather was great and the recruits,
I hope, had a good time. The Saturday was completed with the Blue/Gold
/Alumni Meet. It was great to see the Alumnus and we hope to expand this
event in the future. All the recruits had great attitudes and any of them
would be welcome, and valuable, additions to the 2001-2002 Slugs. For
those of you that missed this weekend, look at our schedule and any weekend
that we are home, we can arrange for you to have a visit.
The Slugs travel this week to
Cal Baptist for the Lancer Invitational. Any swimmers in Southern California
that would like to come by the meet, we will be at Cal Baptist in Riverside
Friday afternoon from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and Saturday 10:00am to about 2:00pm.
We are the defending champions of this event and we will try to repeat.
I want to remind everyone that
UC Applications are due by the end of November. The season is heating
up and we have been progressing our workloads and times are starting to
improve. Look for more NCAA cuts during the next few meets. The next newsletter
will be sent out following the San Jose State/ Cal Poly dual meets. As

Dear Prospective Slug,
It is the beginning of a new
year and this is the first newsletter. Many seniors have responded so
far to our first letter. It is good to see UCSC listed as one of their
top choices. Several have already claimed that if accepted to school,
they are coming.
We have our first meet this coming
weekend. It is a non-scoring meet against Arden Hills, a USA Club team
from Sacramento. We are looking forward to getting in a meet. We are sorry
to say that we have suffered a set back. Sarah Ross ( 99-00 All American
in three events) has broken a bone in one of her vertebra and will be
lost for the year. She will most likely be having an operation to set
the bones with pins. Our thoughts will be with her.
So far our class of freshman
have been great. Stephanie Miller, Kara Holzworth, and Alison Sauer have
been leading the charge on the Women's side, while Asok Lindberg, Fred
Drier, and Cary Ozanian have been doing the work for the Men. It is a
big transition for many of the freshman, but they are generally holding
up well.
Next weekend (Oct 13-14) is the
UOP invitation in Stockton. Last year we won the non-Division I portion
of this meet, and will attempt to do so again. Last year we graduated
seven seniors and it will be interesting to see who steps up as team leaders.
October 20-21 is our first recruiting
weekend. Saturday the 21st is our Blue/Gold/ Alumni swim meet. This should
be a fun weekend. There are many campus events going on the same time.
If you can make it to campus we would enjoy having you stay with the team
and getting to know us better. If you are planning on coming please contact
me so that we can arrange housing.
