Swimming: Year in Review - Weston wins National Championship; Maglasang finishes career with 21 All-American selections

It was another tremendous season for the UC Santa Cruz Swim team. UCSC sent a record nine swimmers to the Division III National Championships in Wooster, Ohio, and all performed well.

UCSC Junior and perennial All-American Ben Weston won the NCAA National Championship in the 500 Free-style at the NCAA Championships in Ohio. Weston's 4:25.16 was the best of the day, and was by far the best time turned in by a UCSC male swimmer in that event. Weston narrowly finished 2nd in the 200 Free and 100 Free events at Nationals. Weston, the lone male representative of UCSC at Nationals, is the first UCSC swimmer to win a National Championship since 1996. For the year, Weston had team-best times in 13 individual categories and was a member of all five top relay teams.

UCSC Senior Andrea Maglasang led a team of eight UCSC women's swimmers into Wooster. In her four seasons at UC Santa Cruz, Maglasang has won All-American nods an astonishing 21 times in numerous events. In Wooster, Maglasang finished with a 9th place finish in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.92) and an 11th place finish in the 100 Butterfly (0:58.04). Maglasang also led two relay teams, the 400 Medley and 800 Free, to 13th and 16th place finishes respectively. In her second year as captain, Andrea had team-best times 10 individual categories and was also the lynchpin of four top relay teams.

Freshman Mollie Lewis certainly made a splash in her National Championship debut. Lewis finished a narrow second place in the 200 Breaststroke. Her 2:21.20 time was a heart-breaking .03 seconds out of first. Lewis also finished 15th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:07.06), and joined Maglasang in representing UCSC in two relay events. In just her first year on the team, Lewis posted team-highs in three categories, and still has a long career ahead of her.

Sophomore Kara Holzworth, making her second trip to Nationals, also had an extremely strong season. Holzwarth's 1:54.19 at Nationals was good for 15th place, and she also participated in the relays with Maglasang and Lewis. Last year's UCSC Female Rookie of the Year for all of athletics, Holzwarth led UCSC in six individual categories, and was part of four top relay teams.

Also strongly representing UCSC at Nationals were Stephanie Miller, Laurel Fink, Keiko Nakai, Kim Onken and Monika Malo. As a team, the Women's Swimming program finished 21st out of more than 50 teams from all over the country. The team hopes to add to its male contingent next year, which will allow it to place highly in that category as well.

Though the program will lose Maglasang next year to graduation, the UCSC Swim team will look to build on its success both will those who swam so competitively this season and with new recruits coming in. UCSC nearly walked away with four National Championships this season. Next year looks even brighter.

Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding season!

All-Americans Andrea Maglasang and Kara Holzworth are just two of the nine swimmers UCSC is sending to the National Championships

UCSC Swimmers at the National Championships

UC Santa Cruz is proud to The Women's Championships will run from March 14-16. The Men's Championships will go from March 21-23.

Perennial All-American Andrea Maglasang leads a talented group of Women looking to improve upon their 15th place team finish last season. She will be joined by Kara Holzworth, Stephanie Miller, Laurel Fink, Keiko Nakai, Mollie Lewis, Kim Onken and Monika Malo. It is the largest contingent of swimmers UCSC has ever sent to the National Championships.

All-American Ben Weston is once again the sole male representative going to the National Championships. Last year Weston, a Junior, finished 2nd in the 200 yard freestyle race, 3rd in the 500 yard freestyle and 4th in the 1650 yard freestyle.

Congratulations and good luck to all the swimmers on an outstanding season!

Trans-Bay Swim a huge Success

Ten swimmers from UCSC's swim team swam a relay fom the Montery Bay Aquarium to the Ideal Bar and Grill in Santa Cruz. The relay was a great success, with a time of 10 hours, 32 minutes, 20 seconds. Special thanks go out to Bill Simpkins and Lou Mata, as well as all the other sponsors of this great event.
