The creator of the Slug Tennis program, Bob Hansen enters his 30th season as the UC Santa Cruz Men's Tennis Coach. Regarded as one of the best coaches in the country, Coach Hansen has been selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coach of the Year four times and in 2000 was honored as the ITA Coach of the Decade for the 90's. (During the 90's his teams were undefeated against Div III opponents in the regular season going 73-0) He has served as an executive board member of the ITA as well as its Division III Representative. He also served as the Chair of the NCAA Div lll tennis committee as well as a member of the ITA Rules Committee.
He has also received the Coach of the Year honor from the United States Professional Tennis Association. Hansen has led the Slugs to the Final Four of the NCAA Team Championships 19 out of the past 23 years. The team has won seven NCAA National Team Championships (1989, 1995,1996,1998, 2005, 2007, 2009) and have reached the NCAA Finals thirteen of the past twenty years. His players have won nine NCAA National Doubles titles and five NCAA National Singles titles. Under coach Hansen's direction, the Slug Tennis program has produced 111 All-American selections.
As a player, Coach Hansen was Northern California's Open Player of the Year and was ranked in the top eight for five straight years. He received an ATP world ranking as well as much valuable coaching experience while playing the international circuit before coming to UC Santa Cruz. He registered wins over many top 100 players including top ten players Brad Gilbert and Paul Macnamee. He won the USTA 40 National Grass Court Championships held in Santa Barbara.
During the summers he directs the NIKE Santa Cruz Tennis Camps where he was a pioneer in the development of the tournament training program for ranked juniors.

Bryce Parmelly graduated from UCSC in 2005 with a degree in Psychology and has been the Head Assistant Coach under Bob Hansen ever since. Bryce played for Slugs from 2001-2005 and was a starting member of the 2005 NCAA National Championship Team. As a player Bryce was doubles champion of the Fall West ITA Regional Championships in 2004 and a finalist of the National ITA Small College Championships that same year with partner Matt Seeberger. He reached his highest National Doubles ranking of 2 in the winter of 2004 and was awarded the title of NCAA All-American in 2005. Bryce's singles successes include numerous wins over top 25 nationally ranked players and a quarterfinal finish at the 2005 Ojai Division 3 Championships. He was Head Assistant under Bob Hansen in 2007 when the slugs accomplished what was considered to be the most dominant season in Division 3 Men's Tennis to date. This included the ITA National Indoor Team Title, the NCAA National Team Title, the NCAA Singles and Doubles Crowns, and a perfect 16-0 record against Division 3 opponents. He was also Head Assistant during the most recent National Team Championship for the slugs this past May of 2009. During the summers Bryce runs the Nike Santa Cruz Jr. Tennis Camps, and will be going into his tenth summer as Assistant Director this upcoming June.

COLIN MARK-GRIFIN

As the newest addition to the Slug tennis coaching staff, Colin Mark-Griffin brings with him three National Championships and four years experience as a starter for the Slugs from 2005-2009. Colin was a singles specialist on the 2007 team that won both the ITA Indoor National Championship and the NCAA Outdoor National Championship. In his Junior and Senior Years, Colin went 24-2 in Division III dual matches. He reached the 2008 Ojai semi-finals, and in November 2008 was ranked as high as 6 in the West Region and 22 Nationally. In 2009, Colin played 5 singles and 3 doubles and helped the Slugs win the NCAA National Championship. He was named an ITA Academic All-American in 2008 and 2009, majoring in Business and Environmental Studies.
Colin hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan and is looking forward to another season as a Slug.
