NCAA Wrap-Up

Dear Slug Fans,

Washington University won the NCAA Team Championship of 2008 with an exciting 5-4 victory over Emory University. In a very balanced year for Div lll tennis the Slugs beat Wash U 6-3 at the ITA National Indoor Championships. Five different teams were ranked number one this year and many new programs have emerged as contenders.

At the NCAA Individual Championships the Slugs were represented by Jared Kamel and Max Ortiz in singles and Jared and Marc Vartabedian in doubles. Going into the final day Jared and Marc are still fighting as they have advanced to the semi finals! After going undefeated for the entire season last year in Div lll matches including our championship run at three doubles, they have stepped up to the challenge of playing one doubles in dramatic fashion again going undefeated for the entire regular season. For this great record the were the top seeds in the individual doubles championship and defeated Michael Limchat and Rodger Mosteller of The College of New Jersey in the first round 6-1,7-5 and John Mook and Eddie Glidewell of Christopher Newport in the quarters 6-2,7-6. Impressive in both matches, I have enjoyed how hard they have competed and how much they have enjoyed the battle.

In singles Jared lost 7-5,6-1 to top seeded John Watts of Washington University. The first set was super close and Watts came through on some key shots to close out the set. Max Ortiz played well against John Hopkin's David Maldow in losing 6-3,6-1. I was very impressed with the overall level of the singles play and know we will need to get much stronger next season to contend for the title.

Thanks again and if you want to follow tomorrow's Match it will be broadcast live on Radiotennis.com. Also there are live stats on the Bates College athletic web site.

Best wishes, Coach Hansen
