March 29, 2008 Slugs Rock on Spring Break
Dear Slug Fans,
What an amazing year! After going 3-1 on our Spring Break trip defeating perennial Div lll power Middlebury 8-1 and #6 ranked NAIA Concordia in a 5-4 thriller, we are now #3 in the country according to d3tennis.blogspot.com! We dropped from our #1 ranking following our win against Condordia because of results in other Div lll matches. We had a wonderful trip due in large part to the kind generosity and hospitality of our host families, the Ortiz’s, the Kamel’s and the Fattahi’s, and to Slug Alum Bryan Shapiro. It was incredible nice to take almost the entire team for a few focused days of great tennis and camaraderie. Our depth and team character will be tested down the stretch this season as many teams across the country have show their ability to compete against the best. Our depth was on display against Occidental College as we played a lineup completely different from the one that played earlier in the day against Middlebury. In going 7-0 we got great contributions from Kian Fattahi and Ulrich Capaul at one doubles, Ilya Gendelman and Aaron Morrill at two doubles, and Marc Vartabedian and Donald James at three doubles to complete the sweep. In singles Silvio Chiba, Marc Vartabedian, Ilya Gendelman and Aaron Morrill won straight set matches to complete the scoring. The final two matches were called because of darkness. Next up will be Div ll Sonoma State University on Sat April 5th at their site followed by our final matches against Cal Poly on April 10th, Redlands University on the 11th and Claremont McKenna on the 13th all on the road. The final match against Claremont will be at 10:30 and may be a factor in who gets to host regionals. Any So Cal Slug Tennis fans should mark their calendars for the key match. Thanks again for all your interest and support and thanks to our wonderful coaches Noah, Donny, Kevin and Bird for all their great help and leadership. I am very proud to lead this amazing group and look forward to the wonderful challenges we will face down the home stretch this season. Best wishes, Coach Hansen and the Slugs |
