Slugs Prevaile in Huge Win Over Stags
Dear Slug Tennis Fans,
Thanks so much for all the wonderful support for this match! Dodging the rain added to the overall excitement of the wonderful match featuring two of the nations top teams. Set late in the season this match has been a focus for most of the season and our players showed great passion and focus in controling the match from the outset in a 6-3 victory.
Max Ortiz and Colin Mark-Griffin got us on the board with an 8-2 victory at three doubles. Colin played incredible tennis and Max was his usual explosive self in a match featuring two NCAA National Doubles champions. At two doubles Jared Kamel and Marc Vartabedian rolled to an 8-3 win showing the form that had them ranked one in the country for most of last season. At one doubles we served for the match at 7-6 and had three match points before falling 9-7.
Up 2-1 after the doubles Jared Kamel but us on the board first with a strong 7-5,6-3 victory at 2 singles. Max Ortiz was up a set and 4-2 but let is slip a bit and lost in a close third set. Next off was Ilya Gendelman who came back from a set and a break down to win 6-1 in the third to put us up 4-2. Colin Mark-Griffin iced the match with a brilliantly played match winning 6-4,7-5 at five singles. Marc Vartabedian put us up 6-2 with at third set match tiebreaker win at six singles to continue his dominant run in dual matches at this spot. At one singles Max Liberty-Point served for the match up as set and 5-4, lost the set in a 6-8 tiebreaker and had to retire with cramps at 2-4 down in the third set for the final 6-3 margin.
Great to see all the Slug alumni, family and friends at the match. Your support was extremely helpful as the Stags also had many spirited fans. Definately a great match and hopefully a preview of next weekends NCAA tournament. We will find out the details of hosting, teams, and times tomorrow and I will forward them to you. Thanks again for everyone who helped in this great effort.
Sincerely, Coaches Hansen, Parmelly and Dorfman and all the Slugs
