March 10, 2004
Dear Slug Tennis Fans,
UCSC ran its season record to 10-2 with a 7-0 victory over the
Bulldogs of Gonzaga University. We have played a great deal of tennis lately
and were extremely sharp in this match. We won the doubles point winning at
all three spots. First off were Brian Casey and Andrew Cohen who
won 8-2 at three doubles. Brain's serve and both of their returns set the tone
for the match. At two doubles Shane Templeman and Matt Seeberger
are making solid doubles play look more and more routine in rolling to an 8-5
victory. Minus a couple of loose service games, Matt and Shane played extremely
well. At one doubles Matt Brunner and Kellen Ali-Christie played
a beautiful tiebreaker to win 9-8.
In singles, the Slugs were dominant in winning all six matches without the
loss of a single set. At one singles, Brian Casey looked very strong
in defeating a very good opponent 6-0,6-4. He was down a break in the second
but responded with some high level play. At two singles, freshman Matt Seeberger
played a very solid and at time spectacular level in defeating his 6'6" serve
and volley opponent by scores of 6-2,6-0. At three singles, junior Matt Brunner
celebrated his 21st birthday with a 6-4,6-0 win over a very solid opponent.
It was good to see Matt Brunner dropping service bombs which makes his whole
game click.
One the back courts the Slugs were even more relentless! At four singles, Shane
Templeman remained undefeated for the year in singles with a 6-1,6-4 victory.
As he continues to improve his attacking game, look out for the opposition!
At five singles, Kevin Casey was relentless in crushing his opponent
6-1,6-0. Kevin served well and was his normal wall from the baseline. Andrew
Cohen rolled at six singles 6-2,6-1. I am very impressed with how Andrew
is controlling the momentum of his recent matches and his shot selection has
been a big part of this success. Bryce Parmelly dominated his opponent
in and exhibition match by a the score of 8-1.
As a team we competed so hard that the opposition wilted under the team and
individual pressure. I am extremely proud of the work we have done lately and
it is showing in our results.
We will take a break from competition now through finals, taking the court next
on March 20th to play a double header against University of the South and Cal
Lutheran University at 10:00 and 2:00 at the East Fiedhouse courts.
As always thanks to our great fans. All the Brunners were here to help Matt
celebrate his 21st and our growing group of loyal fans helped a great deal in
keeping us focused and motivated.
Thanks and best wishes,
Coach Hansen and the Slugs
