Season Preview 2007
The Slugs are looking to build on their success from last season. They finished ranked #12 in the nation in NCAA Division 3 and are focused on achieving another birth into the NCAA tournament and finishing in the top ten. This year’s team has the potential to be even better than last year, returning eight of ten players from last year. There are two freshmen this year who have been nothing but positive assets to the team.
We have three seniors this year who are eager to lead the team to the postseason. Angel Zabala from San Francisco, CA held the top spots in both singles and doubles. She is one of the best natural talents on the team and is once again looking to build on a successful fall season and compete for the top spot. Emily Cook from Yreka, California continues to be our hardest worker and is steadily improving her game. She is competing for a spot in both the singles and doubles lineup. Lauren Tisdale from Goleta, CA rounds out the trio. She is a solid doubles player and has shown great improvements in her singles game.
Our largest group is our junior class which consists of five players. Kelly Kerr is our local from Aptos, CA. She is a hard worker and is always looking for ways to improve her game. Kelly is challenging for a spot in the lineup this year. Chayla Furlong from Auburn, CA is a very strong doubles player and has a much improved singles game. She is looking to become a fixture in both the singles and doubles lineup. Megan Sweeney from Berkeley, CA is coming off a successful 2006 season and is competing for one of the top spots in the lineup. Jessica Ruth from Novato, CA had a great 2006 season for the slugs after transferring from UC Irvine. She is looking to continue her success from last year and is in competition for one of the top spots. Marjorie Youn from Gold River, CA rounds out the junior class and has continued to improve every year. A strong competitor, Marjorie is a fixture in the lineup.
The two freshmen this year have come in with positive attitudes and are some of the hardest workers on the team. As they start their journeys, we are excited to have them join our family and to be a part of the team for years to come. Kyla Rowe is our out-of-state representative from Ann Arbor, MI. She is a strong doubles player and is looking to become a fixture in both the singles and doubles lineup. Chrissy Nichol from Orinda, CA is one of the hardest workers on the team and has one of the most positive attitudes. She continues to improve on a daily basis.
Leading the slugs into the 2007 season is first year head coach Erin Ness. Graduating in June 2006 from UCSC, Erin played on the team for all her four years and is excited to embrace this new role. Finishing the preseason ranked fifth in the west region and 15th in the nation, we are looking to go to the postseason again this year and to build on the success of last year. We are excited about having a successful season, and want to thank all our families, friends, and fans who support us.
