Banana Slugs Sweep Warriors UC Santa Cruz Women’s Tennis (2-1) pulled off a sweep over the Westmont Warriors (1-2) on a warm Friday afternoon at the Abbott Tennis Courts on the Westmont campus. The Banana Slugs Megan Sweeney and Jessica Ruth defeated Lorelei Belindean and Gillian Ayres on court one by a score of 8-5. On court three, Angel Zabala and Lauren Tisdale – a senior from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta - claimed an 8-4 victory over Westmont’s Sarah Kamida and Gabriela Michel. Westmont nearly picked up a point on court two where the Warriors’ Jennie Dunn and Lauren DiSalvo held a 7-6 lead with the serve. But Kyla Rowe and Chayla Furlong managed to break serve twice to claim a 9-7 win. In the singles matches, Ayres won the first set 6-4 at number two, but Zabala stormed back to take sets two and three 6-0, 6-0. Ruth defeated Belindean on court one 6-1, 6-3 and Sweeney picked up a point for the Banana Slugs at number three with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dunn. UC Santa Cruz won handily on the lower courts. At number four Marjorie Youn defeated DiSalvo 6-1, 6-1, while on court five Furlong won 6-1, 6-2 over Kamida. Rowe swept Emily Hughes at number six 6-0, 6-0. Westmont will return to the Abbott Tennis Courts tomorrow where they will host #3 Vanguard at 1:00 p.m. UC Santa Cruz 9 Westmont 0 Singles Doubles |
