Women's Tennis Has Successful Fall ITA Tournament

The 2007-2008 season for the slugs has started with a successful showing at the Fall Regional ITA tournament at the Claremont and Pomona colleges.  Going into the tournament, three of our players were ranked in the singles draw.  Jessica Ruth (senior) was the #3 seed, Megan Sweeney (senior) was the #6 seed, and Kyla Rowe (sophomore) was the #12 seed.  In the doubles draw, Kyla Rowe and Chayla Furlong (senior) were the #4 seed, and Jessica Ruth and Megan Sweeney were the #2 seed.  The slugs received eight entries into the tournament and three of them were freshmen.

After a long day of tennis with players averaging three to four matches that day, Kyla, Megan, and Jessica went through to the round of 16 in singles, and the two seeded doubles teams went through to the round of 16 for doubles.  Sunday started off with Jessica winning a tough match against a freshman from Occidental 6-2, 6-2.  Megan battled through a 3-hour long match against a senior from Redlands and pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.  Kyla faced the #2 seed in the tournament and played well but fell short, losing 6-2, 6-3.  In the quarterfinal round of singles, Megan turned around after only a one hour break and fell 6-1, 6-1 to the #1 seed in the tournament.  Jessica played a very well fought and smart match to beat a talented freshman from Redlands 6-4, 6-4.  This victory put her through to the semifinals and to the farthest she’s ever been in this tournament. Doubles was next and both teams had strong wins over their opponents.  Chayla and Kyla played a great match against a Pomona team, winning 8-2 and getting to the semifinals.  Megan and Jessica defeated the #6 seeded team from Claremont 8-5. Both teams were in the semifinals for doubles and this marked the one of the strongest showings the lady slugs have ever had in this tournament.  Chayla and Kyla played against the defending champions from last fall and the #1 seed in the tournament.  They fought well but came up short, falling 8-3.  Megan and Jessica were each playing their fourth match of the day and fell the to #3 seed in the tournament and eventual champions 8-3.

In the singles semi finals, Jessica faced off against the #2 seed in the tournament.  She played very well and fought hard, but lost to Yassie Entekhabi 6-4, 6-0.  That same morning the semis and finals for the consolation draw were played.  One of the new freshmen, Taylor Mannix, won the consolation bracket for people who lost in the second round of the tournament.  She beat a player from Chapman University 6-2, 6-2.  Chayla Furlong won her consolation bracket for people who lost in the first round of the tournament 6-4, 6-4.

This was one of the best showings we as a team have had at the fall ITA tournament in our program’s history.  Our success has paved the way for a great season to come, and we are now one more step closer to going to nationals in May.  Thank you to our friends and family who came out to watch and support us, and we look forward to seeing you at our future matches this season.
