Slugs Drop Season Opener to Santa Clara
SANTA
CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz started its 2009 season with a tough loss to Santa Clara University. The Slugs played tough and were competitive against the Broncos but ended up losing 7-0. With no seniors and four freshmen, Santa Cruz is a young but very talented team who is looking to repeat last year’s success. Led by sophomore Taylor Mannix and junior Kyla Rowe at the top doubles spot, UCSC played strong doubles and lost 8-1 across the board.
In singles, the slugs were swept but the final scores do not reflect how close and competitively the matches were. Freshman Danielle Antoinette Burke had a spectacular first match of her collegiate career in losing to Carmen Pham 6-2, 6-4 and almost pushing her to a third set.
Thank you to all the parents and friends who came to support the team in their first match of the season. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Up next for the slugs is UC Davis at Davis on Jan 31 at 12pm.
