Tennis Shuts Out UCSC In Final Home Appearance

SAN JOSE, CA -- The San Jose State women's tennis team defeated UC Santa Cruz, 7-0 on April 13, in what was the final home match of the 2010 dual season at the Spartan Tennis Complex. The win snapped a six-match losing streak for the Spartans.

Megan Kummer and Jennifer Williams, were honored before the match by both coaches and fans for being this year's graduating seniors on the 2010 tennis team.

San Jose State got off to a fast start, taking two of three matches in the doubles competition to secure a match point before entering singles play.

Williams paired up with Olivia Marshall to take down the Banana Slugs' number three doubles duo, 8-1. Chau Truong and Anna Guzman also won in doubles for the Spartans, 8-3, over Kyla Rowe and Sarah Malone.

In singles, Megan Kummer played on the court just beside her sister Kerri, and both of the Kummers came up with wins.

Kerri played in the number one spot for the first time this season, and defeated Ariana Mokhtari, 6-3, 6-4.

Megan dropped the first set to Christine Nichol, but came roaring back in the second by not letting a single point by. Megan went on to win the third set and the match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Williams also recorded a, 6-0, score in the second of a straight set win over Nicole Hannouche, 6-1, 6-0.

"It's not sad at all," said Williams following her final match in front of the home crowd. "We are actually very excited to be moving on, and it feels good to end on a win here at home in front of everyone."

Chau Truong found herself down in the second set against Taylor Mannix, but managed to regain the lead and win the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Anna Guzman and Sandra Florea both won in straight sets for San Jose State to cap off the 7-0 sweep.

Guzman beat Kyla Rowe, 6-3, 6-3, while Florea defeated Rachel Shinto, 6-1, 6-4.

"I couldn't be happier for our seniors to go out with a win like this," said Spartans' head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church.
