ALL-AMERICAN TWICE IN A ROW: UCSC Junior Katie Frick holds the #1 spot for the Women's Tennis Team.
|
February 2, 2004
Women's Tennis Season Begins
The 2004 Women's Tennis Team finished 2003 with an NCAA National Ranking of #24. This year, the team is ranked #19 in the country and #6 in the West Region in the preseason polls and is looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. Coach Dave Muldawer is in his eighth season as head coach and believes this is his strongest squad ever.
The team is led by junior Katie Frick who secured All-American status for the second consecutive year by winning the ITA West Regional Tournament this past fall. Also returning are two strong seniors in Sara Moglen and Jocelyn Werner. They will both be playing in the singles lineup and should provide good experience for the team. Also returning are sophomores Erin Ness and Erica Lee who will be contributing in both singles and doubles.
The team also features four new freshmen, two of which should make a strong impact on this season. Courtney Armstrong is a highly ranked player from Santa Barbara and Angel Zabala is a skilled player from San Francisco. Also joining the team are Lauren Tisdale and Emily Cook who have both shown tremendous improvement in their short time with the team.
The Slugs have one of the toughest schedules in the nation as they are set to compete against eight of the top eighteen Division III teams in the country, including a trip to Virginia to compete in the Fab Five Tournament. We are excited to announce that UC Santa Cruz has recently been chosen as the host of the 2006 NCAA National Championships.

Women's Tennis loses to Davis, now faces key matches
Saturday the Lady Slugs wrapped up a three day homestand with a 7-2 loss to visiting UC Davis.
After dropping all three of the doubles matches, everyone fought hard against a talented Davis squad. Katie Frick was able to see her recent practicing finally pay off with a straight set victory over Janice Salomon at #1 singles.
After winning the first set, Katie got down 3-0 to start the second before storming back to a 6-4 win. Her continued focus and confidence in her shots kept the offensive minded Salomon from being able to finish points consistently.
Our other win came at #4 singles where freshman Erica Lee earned her first singles win as a Slug. Erica played extremely tough and showed great resiliency while playing a smart match at the same time. It was great to see her game continue to improve and nice to see a victory from Erica. Another bright spot on the day was at #3 singles. Ellen Ganz fought through a tight first set losing 5-7 before taking control of the second set 6-2. A marathon super tiebreak ended the match with UC Davis’ Gretchen Shantz coming up with some big shots for the 15-13 win.

The team plays its next match this Thursday at home against another top Division I opponent, St. Mary's. Match time is set for 2:00 PM.

Frick, Moglen take Women's Tennis to new heights
With the start of the regular season still three months away, Sophomore Katie Frick and Junior Sara Moglen already have the UCSC Women's Tennis team off to a great start.
The team traveled down to the Claremont Colleges for the Omni Hotels NCAA Division III West Regional individual tournament this past weekend, with teams from all over northern and southern California sent representatives.
In a 32-woman single elimination tournament, Frick dominated, winning five straight matches enroute to the championship. Against some of the strongest competition for all of Division III, Frick didn't lose a set and only twice did she give up as many as three points to her opponent. With her championship win, Frick clinched an All-American selection. It was the first time in school history that a Banana Slug has received an All-Amercan selection.
Frick then teamed with Moglen to likewise dominate the Doubles tournament. After a first-round bye, the #1 doubles team from UCSC virtually breezed through, winning all four matches en route to the Championship. Only once were the two pressed, giving up 5 points in their semifinal match to Becca Dutton and Margaret Huff of Claremont Mudd-Scripps. After pulling through, Frick and Moglen easily won the championship match, 8-0. Frick and Moglen are now the first doubles team from UCSC to be selected All-Americans.
Next week the two players will head to Corpus Christie, Texas for the Omni Hotels National tournament. It will be the first time ever UCSC has sent players to that tournament.
Congratulations to both players, and good luck in Texas!

Women's Tennis: Year in Review
The Women's Tennis finished their season ranked 15th in the nation and 4th in the Western Region according to the latest ITA polls.
The team made the NCAA Western Regionals, losing to Trinity College, the team who finished fourth in the nation after the NCAA Championships.
UCSC Freshman Katie Frick became just the third player in UCSC history to be selected to the NCAA Singles Championships at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. Frick faced a tough first-round matchup in third-seeded Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University, ultimately losing 6-1, 6-0. Frick set a team record with a 17-5 record in singles play during the regular season. As this was just her rookie year, there are great expectations that Frick and the other young players on the team will be able to lead the program to even greater heights.
One of those players will be Sophomore Sara Moglen, who narrowly missed out on accompanying Frick to Virginia. Moglen held down the #1 singles spot for much of the year, finishing as the eigth-ranked player in the Western Region.
Junior Sharron Lyda was another player who finished the season strong. Lyda's 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Christy Austin of Trinity in the Western Regionals was UCSC's lone victory in singles play. Lyda also played a hand in the other point, teaming up with Katie Frick to give UCSC a doubles point against on of the top pairs in the region.
Finally, Noreen Montgomery, the team's sole departing senior, displayed tremendous leadership for the young team throughout the season. Her dedication and commitment, both on the tennis court and in the classroom, makes her a prime example of spirit of UC Santa Cruz athletics.
Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding year!

Women's Tennis wins 5 of 6; closes in on first playoff berth
The Women's Tennis team has won 5 of their last six matches, including a sweep of Division III opponents at last weekend's Slug Round-Robin Invitational, putting them in third place in the latest ITA Western Region Standings.
The streak started with a 8-1 thrashing of Westmont College. UCSC then played perhaps its most important match of the season on the road at University of Redlands, one of the top teams in the west. In a meet that came down to the wire, UCSC came out on top, 5-4.
In their next meet, UCSC met up with DIII Women's Tennis powerhouse Williams College of Massachusetts, the defending National Champions. Sophomore Sara Moglen and Junior Heather Ulrey provided UCSC's lone victory in a valliant effort, as UCSC fell 1-8.
Next came the Slug Round-Robin tournament, with Division III teams from Linfield College, Cal Lutheran and Hardin-Simmons all attending. UCSC would sweep aside all three, beating both Linfield and Cal Lutheran 8-1, and coming out on top against Hardin-Simmons, 6-3.
UC Santa Cruz wraps up its regular season April 12 against USF. The team eagerly awaits word on its seeding for NCAA playoffs.

ITA Fall Regional Tournament
The UC Santa Cruz Women's Tennis Team kicked off
the 2001/2002 season with a strong showing at this preseason tournament
held in Claremont. It was an individual tournament consisting of players
from NCAA Division III teams from the West Region. The Slugs had eight
players entered in the draw and three of them made their way to the quarterfinals
of the singles draw. This equaled the feat of Claremont, which also placed
three players in the quarterfinals. The remaining two spots were held
by Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier College. Overall, Claremont led the way
with 23 total victories, but the Slugs were a close second with 19 victories,
easily surpassing Redlands' total of 13.
Individual highlights started with Katie Frick,
a freshman from La Verne. She piled up some impressive victories en route
to a close loss in the semifinals of singles. She upset one of Claremont's
best players in the first round, and continued to impress as she defeated
the number one player for Redlands. The Redlands player is also a freshman,
and was ranked #3 in the state of Hawaii last year. She lost a tough 3
set match in the semis but shows great promise for the season. Another
strong showing was made by Silvia Balbach, an exchange student from Germany.
She defeated two tough players, including the number one player from Chapman
6-1, 6-1. The third Santa Cruz player in the quarterfinals was Heather
Ulrey, a junior from Davis. She beat one of the top players from Redlands
before defeating her teammate and last year's doubles partner, Kori Howrish,
in the next round. She lost to the eventual champion from Pomona-Pitzer,
one of the top players in the country. Other singles highlights came from
Sara Moglen, a sophomore transfer student from Mills College. Sara reached
the finals of the consolation bracket before falling to a nationally ranked
player from Claremont. The other slugs in the singles draw were senior
Noreen Montgomery, junior Sharran Lyda, and junior Ellen Ganz.
In the doubles draw, Sara Moglen and Heather Ulrey
teamed up to reach the quarterfinals where they lost to the #1 seeds,
a nationally ranked team from Pomona-Pitzer. UC Santa Cruz dominated the
consolation bracket as three teams reached the semi-finals and it was
an all-Slug final. The winning team was Ellen Ganz and Silvia Balbach,
who defeated Noreen Montgomery and Sharran Lyda 8-4 in the championship.
They also defeated teammates Kori Howrish and Katie Frick in the semis
by the same score of 8-4.
Notes: Last year the women's team finished the
season ranked #6 in the West region and #30 in the country. Although the
preseason ranking have yet to be released, the Slugs will most likely
be ranked #4 in the West, matching their highest placement ever.
Midseason Report
The women's tennis team enters
the 2001 season with high expectations after just falling short of a birth
in the NCAA Regional Championships in 2000. The top 5 teams in the West
Region will be selected for postseason competition, and the Slugs currently
hold the #5 position. UCSC will be competing against the other top teams
in the region and are optimistic about their chances. Leading the team
this year is a freshman, Nicole Hunstock. Nicole was one of the top junior
players in Northern California and began the year by reaching the semifinals
of the ITA Fall Regional Tournament. She has a preseason ranking of #9
in singles and has a chance to qualify for the National Championships
as a singles and doubles player. Her doubles partner is Jill Brogan, a
fourth-year student from Calistoga, Ca. After playing #1 doubles and #2
singles for two years, Jill took last year off due to surgery on both
of her feet. She is excited to be playing once again and brings great
leadership and energy to the team. Kori Howrish, a sophomore from Wyoming
will be playing #2 singles and #2 doubles. Kori has a strong all-court
game and is capable of beating anyone in the region.
She also has a strong tennis backround and will
be a backbone of the team for years to come. Her doubles partner will
once again be Heather Ulrey. Heather is from Davis, Ca and is also a sophomore.
Heather and Kori are a force at #2 doubles and Heather has shown great
improvement in her singles, as evidenced by her early-season win against
UC Davis. Holding down the #4 singles position will be Ellen Ganz. Ellen
is originally from Claremont, Ca and brings a great work ethic to the
team. Her game has improved dramatically in one year and she can always
be counted on to find a way to get the ball in play. She is a tough competitor
and is due for a great sophomore year. Rounding out the singles lineup
is Noreen Montgomery. After playing Junior College Softball, Noreen is
refocused on her tennis game and is ready to contribute to the team. Her
confidence is beginning to grow and she will also be pairing with Ellen
Ganz at #3 doubles.

Women's Tennis Stays in Playoff Hunt with Clutch Win over Redlands
Jill Brogan's 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Marci Everly
gave the Women's Tennis team a 5-4 win over rival University of Redlands.
Nicole Hunstock and Kori Howrish also came up strong
in singles competition, earning 6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 wins, respectively.
The win leaves UCSC with a 6-6 overall record in
Division III matches with just a week left in the regular season. The
Slugs will find out later this month if they've qualified for the Division
III Regional Playoffs.
