April 11, 2008 UC Santa Cruz's Bryan Shires Named AVCA DIII Men's National Player of the Year April 9, 2008 Three Men's Volleyball Players receive All-American Honors SANTA CRUZ, CA – The AVCA has announced the 2008 Division III list of All-American honorees. This year the Slugs have 3 athletes recognized including Senior Bryan Shires, Sophomore Austin Einhorn, and Sophomore Brad Sullivan. The Banana Slugs finished a runner-up to Juniata College in the 2006 event and placed third in 2004 in their only other appearances in the event.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and USA Volleyball, in conjunction with Molten U.S.A., Inc., are pleased to announce the University of California, Santa Cruz as the 2008 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship Midwest/West Region at-large representative. This year’s tournament will be April 11-12 at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Bryan Shires, a 6-3 outside hitter for then-No. 3. UC Santa Cruz, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men’s National Player of the Week. He earned the award after leading his team to a 4-0 record at the Wisconsin Invitational, which included wins over three nationally ranked teams. In the Banana Slugs’ sweep of then-No. 15 Milwaukee School of Engineering, Shires scored seven kills, five digs and a block, then followed that up with eight kills, one ace and two digs in a 3-0 win over then-No. 11 Rivier.
